I went out shooting in the National Forest this afternoon. I brought along the standard fare; my Satori, my 18-1 target, my dog and 4 arrows.
Steep uphill shots are a challenging for me, so I practice this shot the most. My first 3 arrows were launched from about 40 paces and went just about where I looked, grouping in a 4" pattern all within 2 or 3" from the center of the circle. Arrow #4 hit some intense gravity and went 8" low, burring in the stump my target was placed on . There was no hope for the point, but a few gentle counterclockwise turns and my arrow saved. It went back in my pocket quiver so it wouldn't be misplaced.
30 arrows or so later, I found a nice rock to sit on and practice shooting from a sitting position. I rolled my target ball out of 20 yard or so and took a seat. My first arrow was a little high, sticking 4" up from the center of the circle. The next arrow when a little about the last. On the third shot I took care to focus on the spot, keep my bow arm still and squeeze my back muscles through the shot. Although my form may have been the stuff of legends on that 3rd shot, I missed my mark.
Not only did I miss the circle, I missed my whole target by no less that 10 feet. Puzzled, I walked off to retrieve my arrow, as it didn't go as far as expected when missing by such a wide margin. The culprit was thought to be a broken nock, or something of the sort, however initial inspection revealed everything was intact, but something was missing; a field point.
