Working on a new backstop, (Finished)

Started shooting again after a few year layoff, just laziness honestly.  Forgot how relaxing it is, well... sometimes!    Got drawn into a great trad only hunt here in Oklahoma so that was motivating enough to get the stick out.  My son who’s 13 took immediate interest so that was a good excuse to go see Terry at the Knocking Point and picked him up a nearly new Wildhorse Creek longbow that he absolutely loves.  With me just restarting and him being completely new I’m already tired of arrow hunting!! 

So we figured we needed a real backstop. Still needs the roof, stall mats hung on the back, beam for the targets to hang from and then just general bracing.  Kinda overkill but should work great. Hopefully lol

Lookin good and your targets will last longer too! Hope the boy sticks with it and encourage him to check in with the gang for tips and techniques. Hopefully he can teach us something after a season in the woods.

Been a long time since of seen a set with both handles the same length. Broke a handle years ago and just put it back in six inches shorter. No more finger pinch. Last set of handles I bought, I cut one shorter before I even installed them.

I have a big stack of pallets that will be gettin turned into a target house soon. I did find the other day that the compressed straw bales our local farm store sells work as excellent arrow stops so im going to line the back wall with them since ive got a stack of them in my shed.

Making a permanent shooting bag setup was one of the best archery moves I have ever made. It has been in place for 16 years, the bag target is just as old and on it's 5th or 6th cover.



Now you have the task of deciding what kind of target goodies to put under your roof, you have plenty of room.

Ok so I finally had time away from work and honey-do’s to get this project pretty well wrapped up. Nothing too special but should last a few years for sure. After flinging a few at it I quickly realized that I’ll need to stabilize the bag a little better. Add a couple bow hangers, hopefully a couple more bags and maybe even a 3D target or two. Overall I’m pleased with it and it was a great father/son project!

You can hang a string from the overhead 2x4 with a ping pong ball on it to shoot at. Have it far enough out from the back stop so the arrows clear. When you hit the ball it will swing and you can try your hand at a moving target.

Really nice job! Wish I had a place of my own to build something like that. Sure would make it easy whenever I got the urge to fling a few!

Came out real nice.  You and your son will get plenty of use out of it.    You'll find improvement ideas the more you use it and add targets.

Looks real nice! Mine is about 1/10 as well built, but a dedicated target pit is a great thing! I’ve lost and broken far fewer arrows since building mine. Have your son help for a bit of “buy in” is all the better! Won’t be long and you’ll be rigging solar powered lights and all sorts of handy stuff!

Thanks fellas,  Pat I’ll be hanging a ping pong ball this evening!! Sounds like a blast with the added “aim small,...” to boot.  Solar lights could be a bonus as well.

Very nice. I built mine last year after years of needing one. I overbuilt it but wanted it to last the rest of my days. I’ll probably use that idea for a backstop.

 That’s s good setup also. Awesome to see the younguns flinging too!! The stall mats seems to work well. I shot them with my 50# longbow and a 545g Carbon, only penetrated about 3-4”. Was a little tougher to remove but not too bad overall

Nice Job MJ, looks like the one I built a number of years ago.  Last year I got three compressed straw bales from Tractor Supply on sale for about $10 each.  Stacked them up on top of a pallet and ratchet strapped them down.  Still going strong and stop all my arrows except when I hit a seam - then the stall mat stops them.  With the roof, even straw bales will last a long time.
