Stashing water

I hope to hunt a remote mountain top this season where there is no water. Thinkin about stashing 3 gallons. Anybody ever done this? Burying it is out of the question. Was gonna hang them in a tree in an old duffel bag, maybe even stash some food and gear. I would like to get at least 3 days up there. What do ya think?

If you're in bear country, be sure to stash food well away from everything else.  Best to use a bear proof container unless you can hang it 15’ high or more in a tree.  I don't know if bears would go after your water or not.  I've always camped in areas with local sources of water, so haven't had to stash any.

Just listened to a tradquest podcast (episode 2) with Chris Tipton where he stashed food and water in a few different places prior to a sheep hunt in case of emergency.

I have stashed some water for climbing trips in the mountains.  I always liked to put them in plastic bottles that were fairly robust. Like the ones that orange juice comes in with the wide mouths.  My biggest concern was keeping them out of sunlight cause plastic leeches weird stuff. Steel containers would be good but I always liked the ability to crush the plastic for the pack out and they are lighter.  As far as food I made a large ammo can with a lockable latch. Food was mountain houses and bars and a lot of climbing gear and ropes. Seemed like they were fairly odorless for food. Along with an extra fuel canister or two. Buried all this under a a lot or rocks. Definitely in bear country. Never had a problem.

I've never done it, but I've seen it on quite a few videos, guys just haul in those thin plastic water bottles, as many as you can tote!

I’ve done it and just used gallon milk jugs with screw on lids , I stuck em under a rock ledge out of the sun and threw some limbs over em. Be sure to use a container you can crush or fold up to pack out. A MSR  colapsable bag works really great but if anyone finds em your out the $$

If you're a wine drinker , the plastic bota type bags that boxed wine ( it's come along way !) comes in works great for this . I'll drink it just for that reason .

Definitely bears around so probably won't stash any food. Never though of the collapsible jugs. I've used them in the past.

I'll ask, if there is no water source in the area, why would there be game?  I've hunted Colorado a few times and there was always places the animals watered even if it were small seeps.

I'm sure the critters know where to get water. There's a crik nearby but cant depend on it and kinda far to go everyday.

Agreed.. animals know every little seep or spring we may not know of. I’ve killed several deer on hill tops where you would swear there wasn’t water for miles. I use a msr filter when there is a good reliable water source but that isn’t always the case

I would guess freezing temperatures will be a factor, so remember to leave expansion room in whatever containers you use, or your stash could become contaminated, or just drained away.

Never thought about freezing. I think I'll put 3 or 4 gal in a 5 gal collapsible and hang it in  a duffel. This spot is at my cabin which is a 250 mile drive. I'll be going up in Sept and was gonna stash the water, so it would be hangin for 4 or 5 weeks. Should be ok?

I would get some of these.  I've used them on a few long term mountain trips and they work great.  Even on stashed water just to be safe.
