Advice on excelsior bale storage...

Hey Guys,

A good friend recently decided to give away his excelsior target bale and I was the very lucky recipient. I don't have any way to move it in and out. Anyone have any suggestions on how to protect this thing from the weather?

It will sit in the back yard in the spot I normally put my smaller targets when I shoot. I know I could build a little "house" for it to sit in with double fold out doors and such, but that is down the road a bit. It's gotta get gone from his house pronto, and I need a way to protect it for the next year or so.

Any help?

I got one thats 20 yrs old, been sitting outside the whole time with just a piece of sheet metal on top of it so it hangs over all the way around. Still in good shape. Just need to keep the snow and rain off the top and it will be fine.

Oh yea, if you can find a pallet or something to keep it off the ground too.

Thanks for the help Eric! I have never had one of these things.

I guess I am comparing it to the straw bales I seem to have to replace every year when they fall apart or sprout mushrooms.

Excelsior?  I've had one in my shop for close to 20 years.  Still as good as new.  They last FOREVER!

Okkeith, I drove two 4x4" into the ground an put two boards across the bottom an shed roof on top with a pc of tin on top, They will last a long time, make sure an wire bales in so they can,t tip over, very heavy an could fall over on you when pulling arrows OUCH that's going to leave a mark!  Later Bob

One of the worst killers of them is allowing them to dry out too much.  If that happens the fibers loose  their resiliency and break when shot into.

I have 2 large (2' X 4') bales of excelsior that I banded together and have shot for 8 years. I built a 3 sided shed for it and covered it with tin. The target still looks like new.

I have another just like it at my hunt camp in Colorado that I keep covered with a blue tarp from Walmart. It is 12 years old and is just as good as new. This stuff is the best target out there.

Where do you get these excelsior bales at,have never seen them around here??

Are these bales able to handle the wheel bows? i shoot both and would like to make an archery "station" in mu yard and these are perfect!
