Ordered my first woodies
« on: August 01, 2018, 10:55:12 AM »
Well with the recent addition of the northern mist shelton it just didnt feel right putting carbons through it. With hunting season not too far off i didnt figure i would have time to build a set of arrows so for the first time i actually ordered some arrows pre made. I was browsing through rose city arrows website and down on the in stock on sale section i found a dozen of their extreme elite woodies in the correct spine and length i need and they already come with zwickey eskimo broadheads attached ( the full dozen has broadheads) for about $20 more than the broadheads alone would cost me. The only thing is that every arrow is crested and fletched a different color but for a set of hunting arrows i could really care less. Will probably pull the broadheads off a few and replace with field tips for practice and squirrels. Now i just have to go out to the marsh to harvest some reeds to weave a basket style quiver and ill be all set.

i really lucked out finding this set. They are 1/4" shorter than the test arrows and the same spine. They are all mismatched colors but hey, itll add character. Now i just need to make a proper back quiver. Just need to decide between reed, cattail or the grape vine thats growing up the side of my house

I have only had a full dozen matching arrows in my entire life, lol. And they didn't last long after a squirrel hunt.

From then on I've just built em out of whatever I had. I usually end up with 3 or 4 that match  :archer2:

That quiver is gonna be sweet. Post a pic when you're done.

I always like to hear what other people are shooting.  If you dont mind, what spine arrow and what poundage bow, etc?

Congrats on the decision to shoot wood through your new bow Justin! I think you'll like the way they perform. Good luck and hope you get to break one off inside a big ole buck! :goldtooth:

When I get a new set of wood arrows I pick out the 4 best ones. Shoot all of them with field points and take the 4 that fly the best and are the straightest and mark them. Save those for broadheads and hunting. Keep the other 8 with field tips and judos for practice. That way when hunting season rolls around, you have nice fresh arrows with good crisp feathers. I don't know about you, but those 8 are looking kinda beat by deer season lol. They get promoted to small game arrows once the season opens.

I never had a "real" dozen matching arrows until my pops got me a set for Christmas one year. So they were kind of a big deal, and it was my way of making them last the longest because I knew I wouldn't get another set for a long time. I'd take 3 at a time and shoot them till they were broken or worn out. I had that dozen for a couple years.

And for whatever reason I've just done it that way ever since, even now that I can build a dozen rather economically.

I often splice feathers differently when I hunt or shoot anyway. I can tell which arrow I shot first. My pants don’t match my shirt either. It’s not a fashion show so I don’t care.
Wood arrows to me seem like they belong traditional. Think you’re gonna love em. Best of luck

With your party color arrows: shoot them all to check for flight,  check your points and nocks for being on center and you may find that the heads may not be set all the same.  Those kind of nocks can fit too tight on certain strings, you may need to take a little bit off of the pinch part with your wife's diamond finger nail file.  Other than the typical checks when shooting arrows other people made, it would be a good thing to have a couple of matching blunts or Judo points for stump shooting for during the season practice.  Cedar arrows can vary in weight, for most people these variations do not matter much with shots 30 yards and under.

The anticipation is killing me. Ive been watching the tracking as ups has slowly weaved their way across the country. The arrows have reached the distribution center 20 miles from here as of this morning and will be here sometime monday. Lucky thing is i am off work monday and tuesday so i will be patiently waiting by my door for the big brown truck.
