Ok to deer hunt with???
« on: March 26, 2008, 10:11:00 AM »
Hello,

I have an old American Archery 60" recurve.  I am guessing it is like late 1950's to early 1960's for its year of manufacture.  It is laminated with what looks like a dark stained maple or maybe a walnut with black glass on both sides.  It has a flat (non radiused) shelf.  It is 50 pounds at 28.  I shoot it at 29 1/2 inch draw.  th etips of the limbs are recurved, but tehre is not much curve in the limbs when unstrung ... my Dwyer defiant long bow has more curve in the limbs.  Anyway, it spits out a 500 grain arrow around 170 feet per second with a 125 grain head.

The bow is safe to shoot.  It is pretty quiet.  I think it would be fine for Wisconsin Whitetails, but am looking for input from those more familiar with recurves than myself.  I am a longbow shooter only.

I look forward to hearing form you trad gangers.

Bob.

Sounds like a good set up to me, as long as it is accurate. Also use two blade cut-on contact BHs.  Duane

You can hunt moose and bears with that bow with the right broadhead.

Thanks for all the replies ... I mixed up two differnt bows however.  Teh specs for teh recurve in question are; 50 pounds at 28 inches, about a 485 to 500 grain arrow and speed is like 155 to 160 feet per second.  Much slower than I originally posted and not as heavy but almost.  I would still assume safe to deer hunt with?

500 grains moving 160fps will kill deer as far as you can hit them. :)Less speed on the same arrow works but because of the trajectory shots need to be kept closer unless you shoot it real well.Just my 2cents of course.  :)
....Quality deer management means shooting them before they get tough....
