Rose Hips
« on: August 15, 2018, 03:58:12 PM »
Hi, Does anyone know if deer eat rose hips and if so, what time of the year do they eat them? I hunt roe deer in France and seem to recall reading somewhere that deer do, in fact, eat them. If they do, I've found a really good potential feeding area. Thanks, Colin

Deer eat anything and everything in the rose family. Rose hips are usually ripe in the fall when they turn red. I imagine the deer eat the rose hips when they are ripe. Whether the deer are drawn to them or just happen to eat as they pass I don't know.

Rose hips are similar to little apples I imagine they eat them.

I like them too. You can taste the vitamin C in them- they're loaded!

I killed a deer late morning once and rose hips were the only thing she had eaten!

If you have mulberry trees in your hunting area look for trees as the leaves start falling. I've seen deer come to and eat like candy mulberry leaves on the ground. They would eat them as quickly as they fell.

Elk will go to a blown down Aspen tree when the leaves are still green.  I don't know why but for some reason they like to eat the leaves off the down trees.
