Having a hard time with release
« on: September 02, 2018, 04:07:15 PM »
Hey guys hoping you can help me out. I am having a terrible time with my release causing my arrow to porpoise. I shoot 3 under anchoring at the corner of mouth. My knock point is 1/2” above shelf. When I shoot with the string on the tips of my right fingers with the string pressure even on each finger is when the arrow slaps the shelf. When I draw with index finger relaxed a bit, the slapping at the riser stops. The problem with that is I can not position my index finger in the same spot or same pressure each time I anchor. I have been working on this all summer trying to correct this problem and having no success and very frustrated.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, with a 3 Under hook, move your nocking locator up to 3/4 inch.
Second, try to learn to deep hook the string.  String into the first joint of the fingers from the tips of the fingers, String pressure MOSTLY on the index and middle fingers and less pressure on the ring finger.  String should NOT be on the finger tips!!!

Finger position is the index finger JUST under the arrow nock.

Thanks Arne. Will shooting a deep hook, cause you to pluck the string?

Not if you do it correctly. BUT, it does take some practice to get right.  Deep hook allows a MORE relaxed hand which in turn will allow the string to flip the fingers out of the way of the string rather than trying to MOVE your fingers out.  You CANNOT move the fingers fast enough to not interfere with the string but the string can flip the fingers out of the way fast enough to not interfere.

Takes some practice and determination to get right!!

ANY changes to form or execution before the "big game", hunting or competition should be done at LEAST 6 months BEFORE the "game."  At this point, IF confident in your shot, go  hunt.  Then when hunting season is over, THEN start to improve your shot!!

I have suffered the same with the arrow hitting the riser with some recurve bows of the past no matter how much tuning I did and I have recurve bows that I can literally put any heavy arrow combination I have out of it and get great arrow flight... we all have quirks in our shooting styles. Be open to trying different bows , you will find some just fit you better than others.

I can't emphasize enough what Arne is saying here.  A relaxed hand helps everything.  I am still struggling with my release as well, but, I have learned that a rock solid anchor point really helps me.  When it isn't as solid and feels like it's floating to me, it makes it incredibly hard to come off the string clean.  When i'm locked in and the anchor point is almost like a pivot point, I am able to release much cleaner.

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD. Jeremiah 17:7

"There is a way which seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death."  Proverbs 14:12

Thanks for your suggestion Arne. I have been shooting a couple hundred arrows a night and seems to be helping. I had a hard time at first hitting what I was aiming for, but that didn't last long. I did find out the the deep hook helps me anchor in the corner of my mouth more solid and shoots a better group.
