Yellowwood, 2 questions.
1- what is the wrap on the grip of the pictured bow?
2- what do you mean by sealer and will it work as a finish for the glass?

Also check out where this knot ended up on my hickory selfbow I made last year.
Had no idea it was there when we glued up the handle. Unfortunately this happened two weeks before the season opened.

But she looked good.

Sorry to here on your hickory bow , I should have posted different, Tru oil can be used as a stand alone finish thats what I used for my main glass hunting bow for this year with the addition of a coat of Johnson wax rubbed matt ,Tru oil needs to be applied in thin coats over a couple of days and rubbed with 0000 abrasive the wax isnt necessary but just added protection , the wrap is split cane on the handle.

Got my care package from Kenny today. Gonna get the overlays glued up tonight and hope to have a full draw pic for you guys by Sunday. Weather is too crappy to hunt this weekend so may as well get this thing done.

Got nocks cut today. String angle looks good at 29-29 1/2” draw. Gotta decide how I’m gonna shape the tips. Thinking tear drop. Grip feels good right now. Gotta serve the string and should be shooting tomorrow. Barring some minor tweaking she should be ready for final sanding after shoot in.

Yes Stic it’s a 60”.

I mean c’mon the expert at Home Depot recommended it also. Who am I to argue?

In all seriousness though. I have thought about plastidip’s clear coat just not for this bow. Or use the black as a temporary limb cover if a bow is too bright.

Gonna go to woodcraft today and check out their oils. Even thought about my brother’s homemade cutting board wax 50/50 beeswax and paraffin.

Osage is a very oily wood to ,take a paper towel with acid tone and rub you riser you will see what I mean , just my 2 cents but I would use some thing proven , that rubberized stuff might add a lot of useless mass !

Yeah I noticed when I rubbed it down with Denatured alcohol that the paper towel turned yellow. Thought it was the saw dust from sanding that didn’t come off with a dry rag.

Just for clarity the plastidip will not be touching this bow and more than likely never touch any bow I own.

I want to try thunderbird but I’m not setup for it yet. Also the 2 part epoxy dissolved in acetone for a finish but not brave enough.  I’m still early in this hobby so many years to experiment.

Tips are shaped and got about 50-75 shots thru her. 600-625 gr (need to find my scale) full length 2117, 3- 4” shield cut, standard insert and nock, 175gr point with b50 and no silencers. With a clean release there is virtually zero hand shock. Shot best with nock at 1/2” high and 7” brace. Kenny you got a winner in this design. It is definitely more forgiving than I thought it’d be when it comes to my form. Gotta get it sanded, finished, and ready for Halloween weekend when the big boys come out to play.

Kenny- so far they both have their ups and downs. I like the point ability of both respectively. I shoot both equally well. Think the 60” is more likely to be with me hunting unless I’m in a tree stand. Gonna try to get out this weekend with both and see how it goes from there.

That said the 60 is nimble and quick to point. It feels like an extension of my arm. Without a chrono I have zero factual data but it sure seems fast even with heavy arrows.

When it comes to a favorite well, I can’t decide. The curves on both are lookers. They both shoot great. My only apples to apples comparison that I’ve noticed is, with the same arrows and string build, the 60 has noticeably less hand shock.

Kenny you build a damn good bow for a very reasonable price. Both designs are winners.

Cody
