Congratulations Jerry & Terry
I did something i have not done before. I gave myself a birthday deer and it only took 47 years lol
I was hunting in a neat little spot. I sit behing this rock wall that I modified to be tall enough that sitting i can just see over, only my head showing. When the deer come I slowly duck below the wall and get low on my knees , bow extended out in front of me, bow end on the ground and wait. I cant see them till they pass a lower spot in the wall where i have a window like opening of low wall to shoot over out to 25 yards. With the wind in the right direction this spot is fun to sit. Well yesterday was my birthday and the wind was perfect for this spot.
I slipped in early and only had to wait till 9:15 for 3 does to feed into view. they were making their way off to a thick bedding area. As they came down the trail I watched as the came closer one was larger and two younger. The bigger doe was out in the lead and when they we closer I ducked behind the wall and into position on my knees. I had a brief but suspenceful wait and as the lead doe came into view she was 20 yards out. I slowly came to full draw, let her clear a tree and softly mouth grunted.
As she stopped and looked towards me I settled infor that fraction of a seckond and released the arrow... The spiraling chartreuse fletching... the graceful arc of the arrow on rout to a deer... the excitment, tension and relief as the arrow flashes and passes through for a clean kill. I rest the bow tip to the ground and wait still soaking it all in as the other two deer come down the same trail looking through the woods for the disturance. Its then I realize the 3 deer changed order while out of sight and I shot one of the younger deer in all my excitment.
I hear a solid thud as the doe drops out of sight 40 yards away... Thunder off in the distance, steel grey sky, cool damp dark earth under my knees... the sounds smells and feels of fall. To wish for it is almost to wish it away as it seems so brief. I try my best to soak it up, take it in, ts simply never enough. Sitting back on my feet I rest my bow down in the colored leaves and lean over to my pack pulling out a crispy fall apple, life is good as I wait.
