Hogs and Javelina Tradgang hunt.
« on: September 20, 2018, 03:13:42 PM »
I have an opening in our schedule for February  3-7, 2019.   5 day hunt for hogs and Javelina.    Strictly bowhunting only.   Arrive on Saturday Feb 2 for orientation to the ranch,   hunt Sunday through Thursday, depart by noon on Friday.
Over 80,000 acres.  We provide a good lease, warm dry bed to sleep in, complete kitchen setup, hot shower, good hog skinning facilities, freezer space and we run around 50 baits on a daily basis.  Tracking and bay dogs (Jagdterriers) on hand to help retrieve your wounded game.  You need to bring your sleeping bag, pillow, bath towel, groceries and beverages, cooler and transportation.  Requires a Texas 5 day nonresident hunting license ($48.50) available over the counter at license sellers statewide.  This is not a white table cloth operation, more like a timeshare in a good hunting camp.  You will need to feed and fend for yourself but we will be available to run interference and assist you in having an enjoyable hunt.  We will let you know where the baits are getting hit and where your best chances of getting a javelina will be.

We have very few rules but these rules must be observed.  1.  No guns on the ranch.  2.  You must close every gate that you drive through.  We cannot afford to have cattle get out on the road.  3.  Limit to one Javelina per hunter.  Your license is good for 2 javies but we impose a limit of one.   We have a decent javelina population and do not want to overharvest.  The javelina have enough trouble competing with the exploding hog population without us putting an unnecessary dent in their numbers.

5 Day hunt is $750.00 per hunter.  $250 deposit to reserve your spot, balance due in cash on arrival.  We would like to limit this hunt to tradgang hunters.  We have bunk space in the shop bunkhouse for 12-15, though 10 is a more comfortable number.  We can easily accommodate 5-7  in the Crane bunkhouse.  We have bedrooms with attached bathrooms in the Crane bunkhouse, may be useful if we have mixed gender hunters that want to participate.

This hunt is in Crane County Texas.  Crane is the county seat of Crane County.  Ranch is located about 30 miles south of Odessa, Texas.  West Texas oil patch, not especially pretty but we do have Javelina and hogs.

Crane has a good grocery store, hardware store, several restaurants and convenience/gas stores. Crane is within easy driving distance of the northwest bunkhouse, <20 miles.

I highly recommend them. Nobody will work harder than Jacob to put you on hogs. And for a bonus, especially for us northerners, it's Texas in February

Is there a good population of rattlers to shoot there?
I hunted the king ranch in kingsville years ago.  Sounds about the same.  Was a good time.

We have plenty of rattlesnakes in west Texas.  We only hunt hogs January through mid March and the snakes are usually hibernating that time of year.   The famous big rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater is just a few miles east of us.   We need to see daytime highs of 85 F for around three consecutive days to break hibernation.  Every few years we will have a warm spell and start to see some snakes on our later hunts, but usually no snakes awake during the winter.

I went hunting here with some Gangers back in 2014 and it is legit.  Solid "man" accommodations and a truly vast territory to hunt.  There are hogs and javies in great numbers and some truly bruiser hogs mixed in.  It is indeed like the planet Mars with bushes haha, pretty fascinating and you can night hunt which is awesome.  I had a songdog symphony while I sat on stand one eve if I recall.  It is nice and far from civilization and when you're on stand or roaming you'll have some nice solitude.  80k acres=125 square miles.  Jacob, Shaun and the fellas out there will take care of you well.

I need to update our availability.  I have received a deposit to fill up the Crane Bunkhouse for this weeks hunt, Feb 3-7, 2019.    I am holding the old shop bunkhouse on the northwest corner of the ranch open for Tradgang hunters only.  I would like to limit this to an additional 8 hunters for the week of Feb 3-7.
We can probably handle more than 8 but we are expecting up to 6 hunters on the east end of the ranch in the Crane bunkhouse and we want to insure everyone has multiple stands available hunt.  We like to have around 12-14 guys a week between both camps.  We have never been accused of overbooking our hunting capacity and this is no time to start.

I have a group of regular hunters that usually hunt out of the old shop bunkhouse the week of Feb 10.    I received deposits from them this week and only three guys have committed to come so far for 2018.  We are asking them if they would be willing to move to the Crane bunkhouse ( has less capacity than the old bunkhouse) so we could also offer a larger group the option of coming the week of Feb 10-14.  We can comfortably have 6-7 guys in the Crane bunkhouse so we will have availability for up to 6-10 guys in a group for the week of Feb 10 for 2019.  Stay tuned for further developments as we firm up our scheduling commitments.

Early afternoon arrival.  We don't have a deadline but you should plan on having some daylight hours to get an orientation to the ranch.  We have good maps/aerial photos of the entire ranch to help you navigate but its best to get your bearings while you can see some landmarks.

We found out last week that we have secured another 30 sections of ranch south of Crane,  that runs along the Pecos river.  We have not hunted this ranch before.  Jacob is going to start baiting this parcel in mid December and put out some trail cameras.  I hope we can take a few of you down there and kill some pigs.  My limited experience of hunting along the river is the pigs do not have to concentrate on waterholes so they are more prone to wander up and down the river.  Sometimes they are plentiful other times they can be gone for a spell.  I suspect they will be vulnerable to a generous feeding of Iowa corn on a regular basis, but we will have to prove that.

Thanks John, we're looking at an arrival time of round 1 at the ranch.  Smoking Joe and I  will be solidifying this by the end of the week. Also will we need four wheel drive to ride around the ranch or will any old rental car do?

Any car will do.  The oil companies have a good road system that they maintain.  You can drive to within sight of most of the waterholes.   We keep a couple of old 4x4 trucks in Texas that we use to bring in your dead pigs if you do not have a truck.

As of right now, I have a group of 5-7 for the same time in the other bunkhouse.  Terry and the gang, I would love to meet up and fling some arrows and hang out.
