Today was a bitter sweet opener to the Arkansas deer and bear season. As many of you know my wife Lisa passed away a month ago and my life is missing the best part of me. She and I had been baiting this bait sight for the month before bear season that you can bait on private land in Arkansas for seven years. We loved the trips up into the Ozark mountains to check the game camera and freshen up the bait. This was the first year in all those years that I had dependable daytime pictures and a bunch of them.
On the way up to the bait, we had a bunch of rain and a huge tree fell across the road. I tried to pull it out but kept breaking the strap that I had. I had to go back and around another direction that had me about 45 minutes late.
I got there before first light with the rain and cloud cover and was only in my ground blind positioned 15 yards from the bait less that 10 minutes when the smaller of three bears that had been coming in showed up at the bait. The bear was taken with a new Tall Tines that Brian and I worked out a trade deal on just this year and its first time in the woods. At the shot the bear bolted and ran but I never heard the death moan. I went to look for the arrow and found it there covered in blood.
After a 30 minute wait I found him less than 80 yards.
The Arrow was one of my hickory shafts with a 100 grain Woodyweight and a 185 Grizzly single bevel head up front making for an 980 grain arrow that will still shave after passing through and breaking ribs. I told you guys that these Hickory shafts were going to kill more game than CWD!
