Wood source for belly wood
« on: September 27, 2018, 07:58:48 AM »
Hey folks,

Me again. So I do have a local supplier for belly wood, in my case Yellow Heart. But they are out of stock and are having trouble getting it in right now.

So I'm just curious if you get your belly wood locally or is there a reputable national dealer that I could buy from?

Thanks,

Beck

1/4 sawn Osage is the best bow wood out there in my opinion.

Hickory is another good wood, as is red elm or hard maple.

Kennym, a sponsor here could help you out.

Kenny is a great guy to deal with.

Yep I've gotten Osage from Kenny.
Ipe is probably my favorite.  I drive an hour to an exotic hardwood store to get it so I can pick the boards I want (I also get yellow heart there).  I've bought it from decking companies but I've had bad luck with them sending me low quality wood.
Life is too short to use marginal bow wood

Oh yeah, I like both of those sites and have bookmarked them.

However, I was hoping for a source that can sell me the unfinished wood so I can mill it down myself and save a good bit of $$.

Recently retired, so I'm trying to keep this new hobby sane. :)

Thanks,

Beck

They both may have what you want.

Also woodcraft lumber stores carry osage.

Any around you?

I have a good place in Knoxville called Jeffries, but they're out of stock and don't know when they'll get any in.

I've bought from them before and even though I'm finding I should have gotten 1/4 sawn and NOT milled it down to 3/8", it costs so much less. I estimated that when I bought from Jeffries and milled it myself, it was less than $6 per bow as opposed to $50 - $75 for pre-milled stuff.

Yup I buy bigger boards and make my own belly and core  lams.

Much easier on the wallet.

My osage and hickory supply is poor right now. Just had a bunch of osage sawed and it is probably 75% throw away. Not sure why I keep doing this with the yellar stuff.... :biglaugh:
Stay sharp, Kenny.
