Having been through the routine, things go slow so don't worry to much.  I had my first PSA at age 48 because my older brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer (you have a high likelyhood if a sibling or parent has it). It was elevated at about 5 at that time.  Went through years of retests and periodic biopsie testing until at age of 56 and a PSA of 17 before biopsies showed any cancer and the docs decided it had progressed enough to treat.  Had surgery in the spring, was back to work in a week, and hunting in the fall with everything pretty much back to normal except still wasn't back to full strength after the 12 week imposed activity restrictions the surgery.  Two years later things are completely back to normal.

So hang in there, catching it early is the most important thing, and you are in a position to do that.  I am available if you have questions.

Living alone, not married, no heirs--- that recovery time is the real issue... Things and surgeons vary time to time and place to place, but 12 weeks?

Gads! Hard to keep up a house/groceries when or depending what restrictions... or activity...

Time will tell... I've had BPH since my late 30's and taking a Beta Blocker for 20-25 years or in that range;  and every Urologist I've seen in various states I lived had differing opinions on this or that... it'll be interested to see what this bird will say whenever I finally get to see him.

Got my attention, for sure, but worry? Well, whatever will be, will be I guess. it's in the Lord's hands so given we're all there all the time, I guess it'll be whatever it'll be... :)

Dave, I had the same problem around 8 years ago. I was 69 years young at that time. My PSA was at 5.1 when I had a blood test. I went through  the testing and was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Doc. gave me several options that he would recommend as a treatment, Removal, radiation, or seeds. None of them sounded good to me. What I ended up going with was not mentioned. It is  what is called Cyberknife Radiation therapy. This consists of the Doc. putting 4 gold markers in your prostate as compass points. A week or so later you have 5 treatments lasting 1 hour that are given every  other day. This is done with a robotic machine that zeros in on the gold markers and you do not feel a thing.  I had no recovery time and zero after effects and drove myself home. I would see if there is a Prostate cancer support group in your area and try to go to several of their meetings and talk to members who have gone through this. Remember this is a slow growth cancer and more men die with it than from it.  Here is a link to some info for you .

Good luck to you,

Bob

Thanks, Bob, et all for the support, suggestions and prayers...

With the local urologist closed for school break (?) I have to wait to even GET an appointment until next week...

My Dad's cousin had the 4 gold "nuggets" ( as he called them) implanted... after his psa went to 12, then it doubled to 24 and he got some radiation treatments... His wife didn't share how long that was in between... That sounds like what he must have had done... since it's 4 gold nuggets...

I'm in that onerous "hurry up and wait" situation, while relying on prayers to deal with it...

I do appreciate the outreach you all are providing.  There is little in the way of support groups here in NE tn, as that is something of an alien concept among these good folks me thinks, but I'll find out...

Good luck to you Doc. My PSA had shot up to 17.5 just before I started my treatment. I have my PSA checked yearly now and for the last 4 years it is undetectable.

That is very cool for you... Everyone of us is somewhat different.  I have older friends who have had radiation, targeted directly on the prostate and then years later had it recur and also had scarring on their bladder with other issues; some suggest that there are some possibilities that preclude other treatments if it recurs, so I hope to be learning a lot more then I ever wanted to know!

Thank you ever so much for your input!  I'm indebted to you for that!

I posted that I made a call to verify I was on the "Call List" for any appt cancellations yesterday and the gal had one for this AM...

I liked the Doc;  He was attentive and interested...they drew more blood for a 2nd PSA test and he explained he gets a Free PSA and Bound PSA results on his tests...

Of course, I had an apptfor 11/12 they gave away so now I cant get back to find out which of the above is MY PSA til 11/29... alas, it's underway and I am grateful the process is started!

To clarify, the recovery time of 12 weeks was just a limit on weight you could lift.  I could care for myself 2 days after surgery and was expected to walk as much as I could - multiple miles if I wanted.   After a week I could drive lift up to 10 lbs and only had restrictions on the amount of weight I could lift after that.

That's kind of you to clarify...

As I said, each doc I have seen around the country seems to have their own belief on how to recuperate post - op...so till I find out I NEED surgery, I will file all these things...

10# isn't much and not sure that would still make a difference, but we'll just cross that bridge once I know more, but thank you so very much!

mid November ain't "soon" in my book, Rodd, but MZ season opens on the 2nd of Nov so life goes on---until it doesn't!

This location is an interesting place...I never waited 3 weeks to get an appointment to wait another month to see a specialist...I think someone burped along the way...

Most I hear tell, have to wait to have another PSA done anyway, so whatever will be, will be

Doc, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

No incredible news to share, but I wanted to thank our resident prayer warriors for keeping me in prayer.

My Appt was to be Nov 12 but for some reason today, I called to verify I was on their cancellation call list and the gal found an opening for tomorrow AM...

Hopefully, this is the beginning of moving forward...

Thank you all again for your prayers and I continue to covet your prayers!

Thanks, Gents...I doubt it was much to do with "luck" on the call, As my mom used to call such things a "god incidence vs. a coincidence"... I just followed a nudge.

As for luck with the outcome... Sigh..I guess that is totally in God's hands as whatever will be will be, but prayers are always appreciated!

Tried to edit my original post but I was on the wrong one so try it again...  :knothead:

Saw Doc this AM; seems sensitive and nice;

He did another PSA blood test but claims there are FREE and BOUND PSA markers and he gets both and the FREE are usually more associated with BPH (which I've had a good long time) and the "bound" are associated with cancer...

Now to wait for a 2nd appt (end of NOV) to find out which is what...they'll do a Ultra sound of the prostate to measure it then too...
