elevated PSA-report 12/3---it's cancer
« on: September 29, 2018, 07:37:05 AM »
I hesitate to ask for self...but had my annual physical and doc figured a way to work in some blood tests... most came back good.  PSA jumped from 2.7 last year to 5.55 this year!

Net can be wonderful tool, but apparently there is a lot of unnecessary stuff that is done that can cause later problems...

have to find a good urologist hereabouts, then pursue alternatives. Prayers appreciated to NOT be cancer...  :knothead:

UPDATE: so today I Had to go in to find out how to prep for Thursday afternoons Ultrasound and Biopsy... not too bad... Couple of fleets, I can eat breakfast day of procedure and then that afternoon, the deed is done.  Then supposedly in a week after that, I know something. Whoopie!  :knothead:

12/3 update: Got the dreaded call today...results back but all the nurse would tell me is that it's cancer and I have to wait till 12/13 to learn more... yippie! :knothead: :banghead:

Thank you both, Rodd and Keefer.  This has been a skeleton in my closet for many years due to BPH and now this...

Finding a reasonable Urologist here is dicey... Some of the better ones are where there are denser population or so I've found... With Medicare, it's hard to know if I can do more then one for a 2nd opinion...

Whatever will be, will be... :o

Prayers sent for you Doc.  Please go and find a urologist.  Do not gamble with ANY doctor.  Not every doctor got A's in medical school.  Do you know what they call a guy who graduated last in class from Escuela de Medicina?  Doctor, that's what!!!  Go and find a real pro please.  Prayers for no cancer and better days for you.

The problem is Al Dente, that FINDING a top of class guy who isn't just BOOK SMART can be interesting...

NOT TO MENTION, the wait for a good specialist...

Up home I'd have had dozens of choices, here, not so much.. :(

I fully understand that Doc, but you cannot roll the dice with your health.  It is truly unfortunate that a misdiagnosis could have fatal implications.  If you are willing to travel to NY, the Long Island area, I can get you a top doc.  I would hate to hear that something was missed or not given a full look at.  I have been down that road with friends and family before.

Al...

Bit complicated... There are decent docs up toward the VA line in NE TN, but not all take Medicare.  Then there is the issue that most are associated with the big Hospital there full of MRSA and I won't go there...

I'll start out here locally as I turned in 2 names this AM to my doc's office to set a specialist appt, but haven't heard yet...

Travel is a problem, let alone medicare and my supplemental filling in that ornery 20%...Does no good to get a problem solved and create a financial disaster...

But thank you ever so kindly for your kind offer of assistance...

:biglaugh:  When it rains it pours!

Al,Got your note alert thru TG and couldn't get into my browser... Was locked out since last night...turned out to be some danged unidentified security update they did and didn't let anyone know how to circumnavigate it...

Without access to the Browser of choice, I Lost all PW's etc and when I referenced my PW book I keep, it said, using MS browser, it wasn't my name... Doh! :knothead:

Anyway, NO word from my Doc's office about securing an appt yet, so tomorrow if I don't hear, I'll call them and find out what's shakin... Need to get it on the books as even here it'll likely be a bit of a delay...

Thanks for prayers and now I'm back (for now)... :jumper:

Hi Doc Nock, I am a nurse practitioner that works with urologists in a prostate cancer clinic here in San Antonio. I would not lose too much sleep just yet. PSA is a very labile test and can go up for a multitude of reasons. I would just have it rechecked in 1-2 months and if it is going down then just recheck it again a few months later. If it is still elevated then it likely needs to be biopsied. But there are many treatments now for prostate cancer as it is the most diagnosed cancer in men and also very curable. If you have any worries you can PM me and I will answer them.

Good luck!

once I see a Urologist, I might check back with you by PM...no need to tie up band width :help:

Folks,

I just learned today that the Urologist is closed for public school Fall Break which is this week coming and perhaps last (?)...my preacher dealt with that last year with them...

I'll still be pinging my GP's office to ensure that they are certain that doc (UROLOGIST) got their faxed request for my appointment...always have to WAIT to SEE a specialist, but NEVER waited to get the appointment to wait.. :(

Well, Rodd, I'm not in charge of much...so this is just one more area I play whatever hand I'm dealt...time will tell...

INFamous El Guapo tells me they "usually" wait a while, then do another PSA to see if it changed and then go from there...

So they're likely not in a big hurry...I learned today going to their website, the Urologist wife is office mgr so if kids are off school, they probably go somewhere as a family... Whatever will be...

I just wish I could push it outa my head a bit more!  :knothead:

Thanks, AL,

I"m hanging... :)

I did manage to find out today that this specialist first reviews your case history, then gets approval from INSURANCE...THEN makes an appt...odd

The GP's office promised that since the specialist is closed this week while school is out, they'll double check if no word by next Monday NOON.  I told them to also point out I can do cancellations since I'm retired...

At least I got some explanation for the delay...

Having been through the routine, things go slow so don't worry to much.  I had my first PSA at age 48 because my older brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer (you have a high likelyhood if a sibling or parent has it). It was elevated at about 5 at that time.  Went through years of retests and periodic biopsie testing until at age of 56 and a PSA of 17 before biopsies showed any cancer and the docs decided it had progressed enough to treat.  Had surgery in the spring, was back to work in a week, and hunting in the fall with everything pretty much back to normal except still wasn't back to full strength after the 12 week imposed activity restrictions the surgery.  Two years later things are completely back to normal.

So hang in there, catching it early is the most important thing, and you are in a position to do that.  I am available if you have questions.
