I’ve re-done a few. The first one I did I ended up wishing I had spent a little more time evening everything out before applying the finish. I had patch-sanded a few spots on the riser and had ended up taking some spots down further than others. When I put the finish on it looked molted or some such thing, like you could see the spots where I went down to the wood. In your case, you’re just working the finish I’d say just so long as you level down the scratches a new coat (or two, or three) will make everything disappear. For whatever it’s worth, I use Tung Oil. It isn’t cheap by any means, but it makes a very strong, glossy finish. Everything else mentioned may work as well or better, thats just what I use. Good luck! I’m shooting an early 70’s Bear Kodiak Hunter that came to me with a couple of dings. After deer and pig runs are over I plan to take my time and refinish it. It’ll probably outlast me.
