Favorite warm weather trad hat?
« on: March 27, 2008, 08:47:00 PM »
I'm wanting to get me a new hat that is not too hot and with a moderate brim.

What do you guys use? Where'd you get it?

                     Thanks, Lin

Boonie hat--oversize so it is loose, but modify chin strap to go behind head, with a slide clamp of some type outside the crown in front to provide wind defeating tension.  Dull colored snap to pull brim up on front or string side, another in back if carrying tall pack.  Wear over cotton bandana doo rag with long tail hanging down neck and covering ears.  If it gets cold, replace bandana with thin watchcap or beanie.

Thanks guys. Keep them coming. I'm leaning towards a Boonie, but an considering a fedora, if I can find one in camo or olive.

The cotton boonie hat is unbeatable!  I can't stand for my string to touch the brim of my hat, and you can flip the brim on a boonie hat up out of the way.

For turkey I use a camo web cap, free from the local cap factory, I cut the brim down to an inch or so. Really ugly.

Recently I have been looking for a warm weather hat for my bald little head and I found what I wanted at Bass Pro Shops.  The RedHead Air Mesh boonie has been working for me pretty good.

I wear a Filson oilcloth packer hat when it is cool, a Stetson bucket hat (sort of a boonie-style but with a little shorter brim) when it is warm.  When it is really hot, I wear a cheap straw fedora from the "mart."  They all have short, flexible brims.

I'll second the air mesh boonie from Bass Pro - very good hat for warm weather!

For a great warm weather hat you can do the Dean Torges boonie with the brim sewn shorter and top cut off with some elastic sew in so it stays on your head.

Had a sew shop make me one years ago but someone at a shoot wanted it more than me. Been meaning to have another one made. Just plain ole great hats for hot weather.

You can see an example of it in his BBO video.

Also the turned around ball cap works great.
