If you grew up hunting white tails like I did, you know this is a special time of year. Took 3 days of vacation to hunt a few days of pre-rut and it’s been perfect weather for it. Hung a stand in a favorite spot on Wednesday afternoon. It’s an old isolated hayfield where bucks like to cruise this time of year to check the does that always hang out here, at least on years when there’s not a bumper acorn crop. Been busy in the shop but finally made time to hang a few cameras to monitor activity a couple weeks ago. Had 3 good bucks showing up regularly with one PY 9 point that had me really fired up. Watched this guy come into the far end of the field around 4:30 on Wednesday. Watched him make a couple scrapes over the 30-45m it took him to come under my tree. Not the biggest one I had pics of but I was stoked when he offered me a broadside shot at about 15 yards. By the time I took the shot it was close to dark. Heard him make what sounded like a short run but decided to pull out to track him the following morning. Returned and found him piled up after about a 50-60 yard run down into the woods. Absolutely no blood until I found my arrow about 15 yards before I spotted him. Followed tracks and scuffed up spots in the freshly fallen leaves to locate him. He’s not the big one I had pics of or as big as some I’ve taken from this spot over the past 20 years or so but extremely proud of this harvest. This is without a doubt my favorite time to of year to be sitting in a tree. Sat the same stand again tonight. Had 4 does in front of me, one at under 10 yards. When that happens you just never know what buck is going to show up to check them out. None did tonight but I also had a young bobcat and a coyote come under the stand shortly before dark. My favorite time of year, by late summer I’m always November Dreaming. Hope everybody else is enjoying this season as much as I am. Even though I’ve spent very limited tim hunting, the last few days have me rejuvenated. For this hunt I used my trusty 54” Black Pearl g3ss 53@28, GT 340 with 250 grain 3 blade VPA.
Good luck to all and enjoy every minute you can spend in the woods.
