Show me your backstop.
« on: November 23, 2018, 05:00:10 PM »
With winter coming, I’m moving my target to the basement.  Now I am in search of a good backstop.  Should I just buy a horse stall mat?

Most definitely! The horse stall mat is cost effective and works great.

X2 on the horse stall mat. I built a 2x4 frame for mine and use it outside in my yard.
Do not follow where the path may lead.  Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.

I’ve got the horse stall mat as well, held up with t-posts & zip ties in my backyard. No basement here so I’ll have to brave the cold.

No pic at the moment but my neighbor’s pond levee is a win win no lost arrows. Dirt piles are just as good and don’t wear out

Yeah but it would probably stink trying to move that dirt pile into his basement.

Horse stall mats work great.  One tip I have for you, don't miss the target and the backstop becomes less critical.

I use an Ames pillow target on a PVC frame in my basement. It has been down there about 16 years and is stuffed with sheets of 6 mil plastic drop cloths. I don't shoot at the vitals much and pick random spots to shoot at like eyeballs, the tip of the tail and others to keep from wearing a spot out. The target is double sided as well. Unfortunately these targets are no longer made but a large coffee back would be the same.

The target is bigger than the picture would suggest, it is about 36" X 30".

A box full of rags makes a good inexpensive backstop. This one has been in use for over 20 years. Glue a smaller box or a cardboard sleeve on the larger box to slip in a pizza box. You can refresh it with a new pizza box or slip a  sheet of cardboard in front of or in the pizza box. After you punch out the center it will still hold arrows that hit the hole for quite a while.

My son and I built this one this summer.  Stall mat works very well.

I've just got three big squares of old carpet hung with an inch in between each one. Works really well, and if you've already got some old carpet laying around, it's cheap too!
