Brace Height and String Length
« on: December 09, 2018, 01:08:20 PM »
I bought a bow off the classifieds, and the string that came with it seems too short to me. It's a 66" hybrid longbow, and the brace height will not get less than 8.5 inches. I think this is way to high for this bow. Whether it is or not,I would like to get a string for it that would make it around seven and three quarters or less. I've tried some other strings I have around for 66" bows, and they don't work, just to get a length. If I just measured the one that it came with and added an inch, would that be too much? I thought of rigging something up to see different brace heights, but haven't come up with very good ideas. Any good thoughts out there?

That’s what I would do is go with 1” shorter string to play around with the brace height but some of the hybrids have a higher brace height.

I would send the old string to one of the professional stringmakers on our board and tell him that with that string the brace height is 8.5”, and would he please make you one that will give you a brace height of 7.75”.  Let him make the decision.

Hey Oldtimer would I want to go shorter? I was thinking 1" longer.

That's a good idea McDave. I'm using Allen at Ten Ring right now,I might leave him a message, and see what he thinks.

What is the length of the string that came with it?

If the bow is actually a 66" AMO, not a sure thing these days, it should take a 63" sting to get proper brace.

In my experience on both if the hybrids I currently own I'm running a string two inches shorter than the amo length of the bow. One is a 58 inch ilf hybrid with a 56 inch string for a 7 3/4 inch brace. The other is a 64 inch with a 62 inch string that's set to 7 7/8 inch brace. Both are 8190f strings so they're low stretch material. For my recurves I use a string 3 inches shorter.

Katman the string is 63 inches long. I might have to do like Max stated and order a 64 inch string.

Yep. An inch longer will be plenty.  May be a tad too long, but can always wind it a little tighter.

Question for ya? Why aren’t you reaching out to the maker and asking him what he recommends brace height wise. Ask him string length as well. It’s ok to adjust things but he’s gotta have recommendations as to where to start
62” Robertson Primal Overdrive 57lbs
62” Robertson Primal Overdrive 52lbs
62” Robertson Primal Overdrive 53lbs
62” Robertson Fatal Styx 47lbs
64” Toelke Whip 52lbs
58” Black Widow PSA 64lbs
62” Black Widow PSA 54lbs
60” Bighorn Grand Slam 60lbs
60” Bear Kodiak Hunter 50lbs painted black. My uncles bow. He may be gone but his spirit isn’t. Bow will hunt again
52” Bear Kodiak Magnum 50lbs

Good ides ya'll. I think I'll try a 64 inch.

Bowguy the bowyer is no longer making bows. It just seemes loud, and it's higher brace than I've ever used.

Yeah I think 64 will get you close. I haven't been shooting trad long but I was a bowjunky with compounds and its transferred over to traditional bows so I've owned quite a few. In my experience the old rule of thumb of 4inches shorter for recurves and 3 inches shorter for longbows has never been the case for me

Max, AMO is 3 inches shorter for recurve OR longbow. http://www.outlab.it/doc/amostd.pdf

Problem is not all bowyers follow AMO when marking bow length.

Alex, post bow specs, make and model, and there may be someone on here that can help.

Oh, interesting. Could've sworn I remembered reading somewhere it was 4 inches. Most of my experience is with ilf rigs so I'd assume length remains fairly consistent with what's stated but I do have two custom longbows and both ended up liking a string two inches shorter. But that could be a product of their design. Thanks for the info

Do you have a longer string that you can sacrifice?  Start tying knots in it till you get it the right length.  Shoot it as you go.   Take it off, measure it and order one that size.

I think 64" will go Alex, but to get shure, try Holm-Made's proposal!
Try to find the sweet spot!
And play arround that spot to find the best brace high my friend. Maybe it's lower maybe not.
My Bezaleel Hybrid 66" needs  a  brace high at  6.9" to perform well!

That's a good idea Chad, but I don't have anything around even from some of my other 66 inch bows that is longer.
