ERC sapwood makes good selfbows so I imagine it would be fine for a core.

Ben, curvy log splits become risers.

Unless I can get a straight 36 inch section out of it.

You could use cedar for a belly lam I would guess, never done it though.

Maybe bowjunkie will chime in here.

I know self bows have been made from cedar staves.

Thanks Roy.  Now that I have a real bandsaw I've been thinking about the best way to cut lams and backings from logs that I've cut.  It seems your way is a good one since you are pretty close to following the grain if you take your cuts from a split stave, like cutting smaller pieces from a quarter of a pie. 
None split quarter sawn wood doesn't necessarily follow the grain even though the growth rings look nice and parallel.

Not all Osage split staves are lam worthy.

Just depends on the tree is all.

But the less quality lams can be used for core lams.

An osage, osage, boo trilam is a sweet shooter...
