Eric, do you bend it into the form and then heat or do you heat it as you bend it into the form.

Heat as I bend into the form, I can feel the limb relax as it heats up, I don't force it.

I am fascinated with the whole bending thing. I know heat and steam achieve the same results by softening the lignin in the wood. I am wondering if one or the other is more effective or has longer lasting results?

Different woods are affected differently. Hickory needs steam for good bending like for recurves but for minor adjustments dry heat seems to work fine. Sometimes steam then dry heat is used to set the bend or correction.

Cut up some red cedar today. Had what I'd guess is an old deer rub on it that gave it some nice figure. Cut up one piece and got a nice 4"x4" block. Should make some nice veneers.

Flem, not sure if its actually considered a native tree but its about the only tree that will grow in my area. I'm not totally sure its red cedar either, could be juniper. It was a dead tree.

ERC is a juniper (Juniperus virginiana sp.) and that looks like ERC to me. The knots really make the grain for lams but not so good for selfbows.

Went to the big box store to get form materials for the ASL form found this fairly strait glued up Brazilian pine got every thing to make the topless form for under $40 ! I'm making it 72" long just in case I want to make a 70" bow

Looking for a little advice from the pros....

I got knock groves filed in and tried to brace this bow after the tiller tree, which went fine, and my string wont stay on the belly side. What I mean is, the limb twists sideways and the string jumps around to the back of the bow. I had this problem once before and ended up cutting the riser out (I think this riser come to think of it). Anyway...I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if there is a cure besides the bandsaw...hahaha

My thumb is for size reference...

If the string is touching the limbs you could try a higher brace height the more reflexed bows seem to like a higher brace at least for me if I try to low of brace I have the same isue you do !

The closer the string is to the tips the more the bow string has a tendency to flip , I usually brace my FHLB bows 7 1/4"- 7 1/2" from the deepest part of the handle works for me !

You might also want to try giving more angle to the string groove
