My deer season ended last Sunday. I got to use the 56” Timberhawk Talon premier I traded for a couple times. Shoots pretty good for me! This was my last sit. First season in forever I haven’t tagged a whitetail. Had two chances I flubbed and let some walk.  Just got some new Talon small game heads though and I’m ready for some small game action! My favorite!

I tend to hunt out of a blind more these days.  It's easier to hide movement and if it's one of my shell blinds scent is contained well until you open the window.   Even pop ups make it a more comfortable sit out of the wind.
However there is something about an open air stand.  Sat in a tripod last Sunday morning.  A doe came in behind me.  Alone with no fawn and good sized.  She was  directly downwind at one point and on a small swell and I was concerned she would wind me.  She stuck her nose up and sniffed several times and the tripod I was in put me only about 3 feet higher than her nose.  Either I as fortunate or my scent control was good enough for the situation because she didn't spook.
She took a trail around the oak trees my stand is in.  With the leaves down the cover is minimal so I drew when she was in the thickest area and held until she came into a basketball size hole in the limbs.  I gave her a soft grunt and she stopped perfect.  I bore down and the string slipped off my fingers.
I love watching the arrow fly and hit true but at 10 yards it was there fast and cracked hard breaking ribs and the backside of the off shoulder blade.
As she ran I knew the shot was a tad high but lethal as she was running through the brush not on the trail.  I saw the lighted nock stop out there about 100 yards through the limbs of the tree in front of me then disappear.
I gave it the 30 minutes of wait more because of the need to let the adrenaline calm down and I was hoping to see another one or a pig as it was only 7:24am when I shot.
The blood trail was easy and the end was sweet.  This is only the second deer I've taken off of the land we bought near Abilene.

My last sit for the season.  Had a button buck at 15, and this guy passed by at 7 yards.  40 by the time I dug the cellphone out.

After the big snow ended last nite, I went about noon to where I got the buck a couple weeks back. The amount of deer tracks was unbelievable . Just from after the snow ended til noonish today.

So I went back in early and got set up. For 3 hours I saw birds and squirrels.

At last minutes of light a doe came but wouldn’t commit to coming thru fence.

Great eve to be out the, nice steady light wind, snow cover , and one deer that must have been too tired to make it to the fence if she made all those gazillion tracks ...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Thanks all! Finally got some snow Saturday.  Went out to try for some small critters, but only cut tracks and no animals. Beautiful and gotta love the new snow smell!

And then I had to find my old Tigershark tree lol it’s been there for quite some time.

Last day of Virginia deer season. 1/5/19. Sounded like a war zone...  Still good to be in a tree.

Next to the last day of the Texas general season! I got a nice doe this afternoon. The wind was howling all day, and finally slacked a bit a little after 5pm.  Shot this doe at 5:44pm!

Very cool encounter tonight!!!
We received about 5-6” of fresh powder last night. I had obligations, so couldn’t hunt til the last couple hours of the day. Temps were in the teens with 15mph winds, so I wasn’t in a big hurry to get in a tree stand. Decided to still hunt my way to a spot where I could overlook a big hollow for a bit before going to stand. As I crept to the edge, I spotted one of the bucks I’ve been after. A very large framed nine point with a couple kickers.
He was at about 80yds and with a doe. The woods were pretty open, so I knew there was no chance for a stalk. She led him deeper to about 100yds, so I just sat and watched. A small forky came in and the ten ran him off. As I sat and watched I couldn’t believe when the buck mounted the doe. I have never witnessed breeding activity this late in the year.
I’d been watching these deer for nearly an hour with a very borderline wind. After doing the deed, the doe closed in to about 60yds and caught my scent. She took off and took the buck and three other deer that had been hiding in the hollow with her.
So many emotions wrapped up in one hunt.

Had a good night last night.  The cold and new snowfall had the deer up early. Two big doe came passed about 4:40 the biggest of the two gave me an opportunity. She was quartered away at about 12 yards. The hit looked a tad farther back than I wanted so I left her till this morning. My concerns weren’t needed.  The trail was easy and she only went 75 yards all down hill. The 0 degree temperatures last night made for and interesting skinning job this morning. The bow is 51#at 27”,  340 axis and single beveled Centaur Battle axe.
