Will I start painting my nails and start to like shopping more if I keep shooting the light stuff ??

,,Sam,,

hmmm. When I talked to you this afternoon, you were in Bass Pro.

Shopping.

Is a man purse next?   :biglaugh:

I'm pretty sure you could throw rocks and kill stuff, draw weight of your bow doesn't matter.

Go for it.  I wish more people would post about these things, as well as s times when penetration was an issue on hogs.  I have been shooting progressively lighter weight bows, as well as the heavier stuff.  Wouldn't expect much problems for deer, and our longer draw length helps a ton.

I am following along as well. I am going towards the 74 year mark. My 60# recurve I shot last year is hanging on the wall. My 55# recurves are not as much fun either. My LB at 55#’s is still fine, I think because of its length. I set up a bow last year with some 42# carbon/foam limbs. It’s easier to hold but I am having a heck of a time with consistency. Tried 3under as well. Maybe the bow is to physically light? I will admit I am not much of a hunter any more but I do have my Javelin tag but to lazy to go hunt in the rain and snow we have had here. I say that lite bow should do for one of those big rats? Opinions are welcome, my man purse has a Marine Corps emblem on it so no one says anything about it to my face.

I know peer pressure is a real thing, at any age, but I think you just need to remind yourself why you are shooting your bow in the first place. If you’re hunting, then nothing but ethical kills and the amount of meat in your freezer should be the measure by which you and your equipment are judged.

If you are target shooting, then it’s all about accuracy.  I find observers and competitors care about 100 times more about the accuracy of your shots than they do your draw weight.

And if someone can’t outshoot you but they make fun of the weight of your bow, well I think the members of this forum could come up with quite a few suitable replies...

I do plan on doing some penetration test shooting with broadheads and different weight arrows ( for my own benefit ). Big hogs are tough critters for sure but I think with the right shot angle ( shot placement ) it’s very doable. Also do agree my longer draw length is a gteat help for me , think I’m going to do some chronograph testing also. I also was very picky with my shots at animals last weekend , passed on many shots that I would have taken easily with my normal gear.....

I recall reading something Jim Dougerty wrote, whom I've always admired, even when he went  to compound. When he was struggling with his cancer he went to a light compound, very light. He stated that several deer and turkeys couldn't tell he was shooting a light bow. They were just as dead.

Still have a hunting story for the end of this , arrows were shot at critters...

I don’t think I’m reinventing the wheel here about lightweight bows , I think many could really benefit form owning one. I understand it’s been said but I don’t think most get it through our thick skulls , it’s just easier to shoot a light bow..

I will continue to shoot my heavy stuff all the time but the light bow has a place. Take it how you want and if it don’t apply to you then don’t listen to what I’m saying ( I never listened in the past ). I currently don’t have any shooting issues and am very happy with my shooting and hunting success ,  but the lightweight bow is helping and reinforcing this. As said above ( and I was one of them years ago ) 70lb bow but releasing 2-3 inches short of full draw. So don’t get all wound up and mad if your a great archer with crappy form then go on with your bad self and keep on keeping on. This is an attempt at helping those that want to be helped , again this is my opinion.  Consistent relatable form will take the majority of shooters ( maybe not you if you are already awesome ) to a better place in shooting a bow..

Sam, I am enjoying this thread a lot, and somewhat grudgingly must agree with your findings. I started out shooting heavy bows (and still prefer them), but due to age and injuries, it is just too difficult to stay in good condition/health necessary to handle them easily. I have used 78#, 65#, 58# bows successfully. However, since my draw is short, I haven't pulled the full weight of them. Now. though my stand by bows are both 53# at 28, so I am actually shooting in the 40"s. They handle superbly. I only dropped the string once this year, but I could not have asked for better performance. I scored a double lung kill, and he only went 35 yards or so. Can't complain about that. When I go to very light bows, my release gets sloppy, though, so I think I will stay with in the 50 - 55# range. When I was younger, I used to consider it somewhat unmanly to use lighter equipment, but as I grew to be a more sensible man, I have somewhat changed my views.

In my deer camp, I am the only archer, so I catch a certain amount of grief as a matter of principle. They especially look down on my haversack. They finally quit calling it a purse when they realized I didn't care about their derisive remarks, especially when they saw how much useful stuff it easily carries.

Just please don't anybody start a thread touting the effectiveness of pink camo. It is hard enough to accept the efficacy of pink fletching. After all, there is only so much progress us Neanderthals can assimilate.

I always want to improve my shooting ability who wouldn’t and I honestly believe the lightweight bows can help many and also can be effective hunting tools. I see way to many people struggle in trad archery and it’s not pretty sometimes. I have had every shooting issue you could think of at one point or another and it sucks. Dang near gave up bowhunting at one point many years ago but an old used 30lb recurve was the key to working through my issues. This was way before the internet and programs and classes that we have now..

This again is my opinion ,  on the debate on light-vs-heavy , I think anyone can tell my 65lbs and a 700gr arrow will penetrate better than my 42lb with 450gr arrow will. Not saying ( you ) but if that heavy arrow can’t hit the animal then what’s the use..

I will choose my set-up for a hunt based on what I think I need for a particular animal , that decision is yours also. So if I choose to carry some gear in my purse that day then that’s exactly what I will do...

I also say I’m a knuckle dragging , tobacco spitting , hairy butted MAN and if you don’t like my purse that’s just fine...

I could probably benefit from taking one of the internet classes or a live class just haven’t tried one yet. I have control of my shot and I can guarantee 100% this has made my shooting at animals way less stressful ( and just my shooting in general also ). I try and help others get through shooting issues and the majority refuse to shoot a light bow and just continue reinforcing bad form as a result. Again shoot the heaviest bow you can handle for sure but be honest with yourself on what that weight is. And if your a great shot with a heavy or light bow with crappy form witch might be your style and works then I’m happy for you..

One of my issues is shooting in front of others I just don’t like it , it always takes me a while to settle down and start shooting good. But once I’m settled in I’m good to go , sounds silly but it’s true. Luckily I don’t have this problem while hunting....

Again I wish I could shoot 70 pounds all day everyday , I wish I could I just can’t do it. For those that can and do that is awesome and for the guys like me that can’t don’t jack with them either.

I still hope to do a dangerous game hunt before I die witch will require a 80-90lb rig witch I know I can do with some training. So if anyone wishes to donate to the Sam needs money to hunt a Cape Buffalo fund just let me know and I will set up an account......

Hey sam, I wear a plaid purse and shoot poorly in crowds.  Too busy talking and my head leaves the shooting game. I shoot best when alone, partly because there's no witness and mostly cause it's true.

Keep on buddy. I often step back to light weight when having not shot in a while, otherwise bad habits rear quickly.
Relax,

Dang Sam, I'm 65 years old and all my trad whitetail bows are #45 or under and I only shoot cedar arrows with 125 grain Magnus Stinger 2-blade broadheads.  When practicing at longer ranges, my 'compound-shooting-wanabe' hunting partner is known to ask me, "Does your husband shoot a real bow?"  He's merely jealous as I know he remembers the all years I totally out shot him with my Mathews Reezen.  Don't think the purse and painted nails would fly at our camp!!!  Serious though, at 25 yards and under I get mostly pass-thrus and great blood trails.  Also, I enjoy shooting my #45 pound long bows and recurve for longer periods of time than I would heavier bows.  :archer2:

Getting down to the bottom of this I , me , Sam Stephens think the lighter weight bows are a great tool for hunting as long as you choose your shots wisely. And a great tool for new archers and to help solve problems with any archer. Plenty of advice here on form and coaching also classes on shooting a bow , but a person has to want to become a better shooter.

No doubt the heavier the bow and arrow combo is the better the penetration will be for the most part. I know some bows are better faster than others so not getting in that debate. I’m talking 2 bows by the same maker same style just one is heavier than the other. If this were not true then go hunt you a elk with a 20lb bow and a 200gr arrow. But at the end of the day my 42lb cheap production longbow that has no soul will flat kill the crap out of stuff.

Sam, like you I don't give a rats butt what other people shoot or carry to their hunt. 20 years ago I shot 65# at my draw length,10 years ago it was mid 50's, and now in my late 60 range I am shooting a recurve that is [email protected] and am still enjoying shooting/hunting. I can still pull heavier bows but not all day long anymore.I will continue to use equipment that will be effective on deer and only take ethical shots.I have seen what my bow will do with a heavy arrow/mid range draw weight and am satisfied. If someone thinks I shoot girly weight that's their problem I just want to keep shooting my bows. Do whatever you need to do to keep in the game-whether heavy or light.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

As some have seen by my other posts recently, I'm just getting back into shooting traditional.  I have a 55#@28" longbow and a 45#@28 recurve.  This past weekend I went to our range with the plan on shooting my longbow for 2-3 hours practicing form and I only managed 1 hour before my arm and shoulder were shaking too much.  I plan I pulling out the recurve and shooting it, who knows I may find that like you Sam, the lighter weight becomes just too fun to not shoot it permanently.

This has been very interesting reading so far, and I am very interested in the results you come up with in the end.  I have gone through some shoulder issues with my right one, have been able to work through them with some physical therapy, and some strengthening exercises, I dropped in bow weight while doing this a couple years ago, but now am back shooting my normal bow weight which is 50-55#s.  I have noticed while going through this using a lower poundage bow it has helped me  with my consistency and being able to hit and hold my anchor longer, and better.  (By the way G Fred calls them Haversacks  :biglaugh: :biglaugh:)

Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.
