Like many here, I used to shoot very heavy bows...70+ pounds.  For a long time I shot bows in the mid-60's and was very comfortable with it.  I'm now in the lower 50's.

But for light bow experience, my wife has killed several whitetails with a 38# longbow and 5/16 diameter, 26" long cedar shafts and the little Zwickey Eskimo head.  Now, she is NOT getting passthru's, but she is getting enough penetration for double lung quick kills.  She is deadly accurate and takes only the best possible shot opportunities and passes the rest.  15 yards and under is where she's at.

Sir, You will probably not start painting your nails. But if you do be aware that, cross dressing sometimes follows. If that becomes a problem we can talk you through it. I am pushing 70 and 45 lbs  is a struggle. Us old guys need all the help we can get. 1whitetail1

Took the lightweight on a hunt last week hoping for some insight on it’s effectiveness...

The set-up is....

Galaxy Ember 60in 42@30
GN quiver
Easton 500 carbon arrows 31in
200gr CutThroat heads
495 grain total arrow weight

Was hunting in the Texas Hillcountry ( all free range no high fence ) during the trip I saw Whitetail , hogs , turkey , Axis , Aoudad. Ended up getting a few shots and the little bow did great and for sure gave me new insight on the topic.

Hold forth Sam! Let's hear that story. My shoulder hasn't quit hurting since elk season from all my practice with my 62# Bob Lee so I'm listening intently here..

Had many close call with hogs but never shot an arrow at one might could have but was wanting the absolute perfect shot angle. Honestly would have made the shots with my regular set-up , have done it many times. So it did cost me a few shots during the hunt but I guess everything has it gives and takes.

Had a out 30 turkey hens come in and one of them was a bearded hen and with some patience I was able to put a great shot on her. I was in a treestand and it ain’t easy getting drawn on 30 turkey and getting a shot off. I had drawn back and was at full draw and had to have the bow so close to the tree my quiver hung up on tree. I was able to hold at full draw move over and still make the shot and she only made it 50 yards. So the ease of the lightweight bow was a big help in this situation for sure. The shot angle was almost straight down and the arrow penetrated with ease until the broadhead hit the ground...

This is the second bearded hen I have ever killed and the first one also came off this same ranch. Very beautiful bird....

Hummmm . . . No Purse or Painted Nails, but I see you're now carrying a pretty 'Fan'.  Time to go shopping next?   :archer:

Nice bird Sam.  Congrats on using the light equipment.  There's always room in the Old Timers Club for new members.

Now need something a little larger to shoot at but while waiting one morning I had about 70 hen turkey visit me. And as luck would have it I get to anchor and shoot right over the ol girl and right into a big rock. After the dust had settled I sneak over to my arrow cause it’s laying right in the trail and to my surprise it’s just fine. It had dead centered a big rock and broadhead and arrow were good as new so the light arrow seems to be pretty tough...

About an hour later 4 Aoudad come out of a draw and start working my direction. It takes about 30min but they are now at about 12yds...

Will finish in a ltttle while , have a lunch meeting....

So they have worked into about 12yds and I now have a big ewe standing slightly quartered away. I’m able to get to full draw without being seen , I see the spot I want the arrow to go but talk myself out of it. I’m thinking stay well off the shoulder and moved my bow hand on purpose a little over to the right. And when I release the arrow hit back farther to the right than I wanted it to but penetrating to the nock. They bolted up the hill and she stopped and started walking slow , I could see blood running down her side as she walked out of sight. Not happy with the shot placement but I know it’s a killing shot , will need to give her time. Got down and was sneaking out along the creek as not to spook anything , looked up to my left and ther she is bedded up looking right at me.

Before I can move on she stands up and to my amazement walks my direction , she only moved 10yds and bedded in some cedars. I eased on out and gave it several hours. Upon returning she had never moved and was stone dead , the shot angel was better than than I thought. She had only gone about 65 yards or so from where the arrow hit her. She is a 5 year old big mature Aoudad...

Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.
