Hey Fred. I saw you might be concerned about longer bow from treestand. It has never been an issue for me. I always make sure there are no branches that could interfere with bow limb clearance.

When I talked to Steve and ordered the American he recommended the 68” for my 28.5” draw. I am a little concerned about that length. For those of you with knowledge about the American can I get away with 66”?

AZ, perhaps look at the new Sprague. Similar reflex in limbs but forward handles usually allows you to shorten bow.

AZ, This is what Steve wrote when I asked him about my 28” draw length....

At 28" you can go either way. Personally, I like longer bows but that's me. You can generally go shorter with a reverse handle because the limbs are closer to you when you draw. With a standard handle design, the limbs can be up to an 1 1/2" away from the palm of your hand. With a reverse handle the limbs are in the palm of your hand. All things being equal, you don't stress the limbs as much with a reverse handle. So to compensate for that, I suggest you go 2" shorter. In a standard handle design I would build you a 66-68", so in the Whisper or Sprague I'd go 64-66". Again, if I was building one for myself I'd go 66". I just like longer bows.
When you think about it, the difference is one inch on each end of the bow.

Craig, I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Sprague. I’m getting close to putting in my order as I’ve narrowed my decision down to a Sprague or a Whisper.

I had the Huron.It was a nice bow.I like the G.N Bushbow a tad more.I also had his Kodiak 59er replica that was a gorgous bow and shot well.No longer made.

I have owned a whisper, shelton and Baraga...I can say this...Steve builds a wonderful bow. Both in shootability and in quality craftsmanship. All 3 of the bows I've owned were top shelf bows. I'd still be shooting one had I not started building bows myself.

When in doubt go longer. I’d agree with Steve. You wouldn’t notice the length hunting, only shooting feel. I got rid of all my 66” longbows and replaced with 68” at one point. That’s how dramatic I felt the little difference was..

Same here...I keep a few of Steve’s because I got them before I started building and figured mine out to look (and shoot) as good before I was happy..I’ve killed many deer with his bows.

Well as luck would have it things can change overnight. I had made up my mind last night that I was going to place an order with Steve Turay for one of his Whispers and then this morning I was offered a deal on a Baraga that I just couldn’t pass up.
