Just throwing this out there-
120# draw weight shooting 460 grain arrow-
330 fps is possible???  :scared:
Was throwing numbers at a speed calculator site- for compounds- not sure if it would translate to a recurve.

Not bad....you've broken the speed of sound if your chrono is reading in meters/sec.

I've heard that every year on one particular day, when everything in the heavens and earth align just right, speeds like that can actually be achieved.

I have it under authority that this shot was not taken at AREA 51 , as most of you thought. It was taken at the sound stage where they shot the movie, Capricorn One. As we all know this was the Documentary about the Apollo Moon Landings. Did I say Moon Landings ? If nothing else, it will be the center of Conspiracy Theory for years to come, "did you hear about the 330+fps arrow shot from a Recurve back in 08"....Really, it figures, I always knew there was more than One Bow.  Tu Compadres, Suty

I was once getting readings where the back skyscreen was picking up the fletching and the front one was picking up the tip. This was on an Oehler 33 where the skyscreens were separate. I thought something was wrong because the speeds were way high. Gary

And now.........the rest of the story

The bow was a DAS Master.

The chrono did actually read those speeds on the first 2 shots.
But, all of the other test shots read between 205-210.
So, I guess the 331 and 334 were just bad readings.
But the first post was all true!
Enjoyed you responses.

I don't know about anyone else, but usually one shooting trad and compound equipment a while knows the difference between a 200fps arrow and one over 300fps.

Back in the early 1980's compounds weren't nearly as fast as they are now. I was at the Anderson Archery Clinic, I had a booth there showing traditional archery stuff. They had a chronograph set up and there was a long line of wheel bows waiting to check their speed. I grabbed my longbow and a couple of my heavy cedars and got in the line. Back then longbows were still a novelty and you didn't see them around much at the bigger events so I was getting a lot of curious looks.

The average speed they were getting with the compounds that day were not much over 200-225 fps     as I recall. They were all shooting long heavy aluminum arrows, no carbons or overdraws back then.

When it was my turn I shot my two shots through at an average of 220fps. A murmur when through the crowd as someone called out the speed of the lowly longbow. I took my arrows and started back to my booth when someone said, "Sir...what weight is your bow?" I ignored it at first and kept walking. He repeated it louder this time, "SIR...WHAT WEIGHT IS THAT BOW?" I said, "104 pounds" everyone laughed..thinking no wonder. I wish I thought quick enough to answer back that it was 55#.      :biglaugh:

Roger Combes from Bow And Arrow Magazine snapped this picture that day when I shot through the crono, and it was later in the magazine.

    :saywhat:

I'm still laughing at those numbers.... From working in a compound shop 3 yrs, I know chronos can give "false" readings every now and then. Even if they have been recalibrated, new batteries, indoor lighting etc, you still get that occasional super high read out.

Don't let any of the major Compound companies see those readings...they'll have those engineers scrambling around redesigning those single cam machines!

John does love to have fun and form the response everyone else does too.

The actual reading of 205-210 with a 208 average was with a DAS 21" Elite with Winex limbs. The bow is 51# at my 28.5 draw and the arrows weigh 355 grains or 6.96 gpp.It is my target and 3D bow.

Happy April Fools day everyone

Hey Randy, my new DAS is shooting so fast with the 47lb limbs that I have to put water on my feathers before each shot just to keep'em from catching on fire!  :biglaugh:
