Thanks for the positive comments on my bow, it could have a surprise or two .

Crooked Stic, I'm surprised maple will suck up resin that good. Will walnut take resin that good?

Never thought elevation would matter that much in a closed system. What does your pump do independently ?

It has to do with the density of the air, you can only get absolute vacuum at sea level. Don't ask me to explain why, the physics are beyond me :knothead:

I may have to resort to Plan B after all, that's pathetic.

I am near Evansville. The Vacuum process only pulls the air out of the wood. 14.7 psi atmospheric pressure pushes the resin in the empty air space. So you vacuum until you see little or no bubbles coming out of the wood. Dont over think it. For all woods probably best results are put your wood in a hotbox For about 4 hours and get all the moisture out. Cool it to room temp in a plastic bag the vac it. especialy walnut. I never have got walnut not to float maybe if it soaked for weeks it might get there. My guess is if you looked at maple under a microscope it may look like a bunch of  soda straws.  :dunno: but it does take resin well.

Calling all smart people ( :banghead: <---- this is me resisting a joke at Roy's expense)  :wavey:

When putting a finish over Bocote, is it recommended to seal it with something? CA glue, manufactured sealer? etc.?

I have Shellac and have worked with it some. My experience is that, regardless of how I apply it, it globs on really thick and never seems to dry correctly so I end up stripping it back off and starting over. Can it be thinned?

Solvent based finishes most times will stick to oily woods without sealer.

I am not familiar with solvent based, just oil and water based. Unless oil based it solvent?

Anything that is reduced with lacquer thinner such as Thunderbird Buff hide and krystal. I have sprayed on oily woods with no problem.

for bocote, cocobolo, I've used super glue for a sealer and it works really well, keep layering it on and sanding down until all the pores are filled then apply any finish you prefer. it comes out looking like glass if finished properly. Unless of course you like the look of open pores in wood then just a couple layers of super glue will work. You need to do at least one maybe two because those tropical woods can be finicky on finishes. I had to start doing it like this because I couldn't get anything to dry on it. ended up having to steel wool gummy finishes off many bow risers because of this.

Rattle can Spar Urethane, I haven't had enough time to learn my spray gun adjustments well enough for this bow. I will do that on one that is less important.

I use O'reillys Duplicolor Perfect Match auto clearcoat, dries on anything I've sprayed it on,  very glossy tho.

I then give a couple coats of matte wheel finish to get a flatter finish, same brand.

I don't have a spray booth and have never yet bought a spray gun.  So the rattle can finish of choice for me...

Shellac thins with denatured alcohol or my favorite everclear. But if it's not dewaxed shellac, the natural waxes will cause adhesion problems with your top coats
