What do you think?
« on: January 28, 2019, 12:33:38 PM »
I have ran into bad spots on knife scales and I just fill them with super glue.
I ran into this one in a very bad spot and the super glue trick doesn't look so good.
Do any of you have an idea to make this look better?
Or should I just leave it and call it character marks?

I take a scrap piece of the same material and use a rasp or file to make some fine sawdust, then fill the hole with the dust mixed with superglue.  On some woods it can be very hard to tell it was ever repaired after sanding the sawdust/glue booger flush and smooth.

The handle is still quite square - what If you put more of a radius on the handle, do you think most of that gap would be eliminated?  You probably wont be able to eliminate all of it, but maybe most.

If it goes deep,  fill it with turquoise sand and thin super glue.

I have given this lots of thought and I finally got some red sand.
Milled pockets to remove the ugly and filled with the sand and super glue.
I think I will be able to salvage these scales.
Thanks for the idea Jeff.

That's going to look real good! That wood will be awesome when its polished. Looks to have a lot of depth.

I really don't like how it turned out.
I'm not even going to polish anymore.
It turned out textured looking and still ugly.
Think I'm going to just mill the scales off and call it scrap.

Finally got around to fixing this knife today.
Just recently did one with a hybrid scale and I had enough to cut a patch out of the acrylic.
