Finally Retired - Hope to hunt more
« on: February 02, 2019, 08:09:10 PM »
Finally, retired after 33 years 9 months with DoD, civil servant.  First 8 years with the US Army and final 26 years with the US Air Force.  Worked safety and weapons safety, as some of you know working for the government can be challenging.  As I told the folks at my retirement lunch, they all had and impact on my career; some good some otherwise, but you take it all and wade it into a ball then smooth it out and go with it.  This is just one more step down the trail and we'll move on from here.  Looking forward to more hunting, Mt Biking and hiking the AT.  Plan to drag my youngest brother with me, he's 52.  Gotta keep the kid out of trouble.

Congrats! I retired a little over a year ago. I spent the summer hiking, fishing, canoeing, and just exploring , and took a 3 week trip to Utah camping and exploring the backcountry , then almost hunted myself into a coma this fall, and I’ve spent lots of time with family,  I watched my dad work all his life only to pass away a year or so after he was forced to retire due to health issues, then I had a friend die of a heart attack at work.. you never when it’s over, or we can’t do it anymore. we weren’t put on this earth to work everyday . I hope to enjoy the next years in similar fashion to this past year.   It’s nice having a week of 6 Saturday’s and a Sunday . Again congrats, enjoy yourself

I retired 13 years ago. Loved every minute of it. First year I hunted 88 days . Killed the smallest buck I saw all season on the last hour of the last day of season and was tickled to death. I hunt mainly alone since retirement, but sometimes get to go with a friend or two. My time in the field has increased ten fold.
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

Right on!!!! I have 31 years DoD.... 13 and change in the Army and just turned 18 in Air Guard as a  federal technician. I hope you chime in on how much more hunting you're getting to do!  I'm looking at maybe 5 more years and following your lead!

Congratulations and thank you for your service!

I'm three years into retirement, and I recommend it highly! I've been gone from home as much as I've been here, thousands of miles on the road, several trips out west and as far north as Alaska. Last summer I drove from Anchorage to my home in Mississippi with a lady friend, the best road trip of my life! Moose, grizzly bears, black bears, caribou, stone sheep, elk, and bison along the Alaska Highway. All of that done before and after hunting seasons, the highlights of the year! I've gotten seriously into mushrooming, too, and have eaten around 15 species so far. I'm probably busier now than I was while employed... retirement can be addictive!

Congrats on retirement, I'm looking for a way to work less and play more. I've depleted my loans and now need to figure out the retirement fund and health insurance. Still would like to have a job but want the lifestyle of a retiree. Congrats again
Relax,

You'll live longer!

So far just two long Mt Bike rides 27.31 and 34.97 miles.  Getting ready for an ACTS retreat my parish asked me to Direct, so I'm hopping.

Retirement is where it’s at!!!!

I’ll never understand anyone who says they won’t have enough to do when they retire. Heck, I retired in 2011, I sometimes wonder how I ever had time to go to work???

Congrats on your career! With all those years in, sounds to me like you earned your retirement!!!!

How is retirement working out? It certainly is great when every day is Saturday, isn't it? Plenty of time to shoot the bow! Even better, plenty of time to scout throughout the year! Congratulations on your retirement.

It's nice to be in Mass Sunday and realize you don't have to go to work Monday morning.  Go to daily Mass then ride Mt Bike for @20 miles, then clean up some of the mess.  Need to get on a bow shooting schedule now that I have time.  Also, start fiddling with knife making.

I retired in October of 2017 (right before deer season of course!) I have to say it has been an adjustment, esp. the post-hunting-season-letdown.

Yes.  I always gain a few pounds sitting on my butt in a stand that much for months so there is dealing with that as well.
