Kids Bows and How Young is Too Young?
« on: April 01, 2008, 10:15:00 PM »
My oldest son Cade will be 4 soon and loves to watch me shoot and retrieve arrows from the bag target. Recently he has started asking when I am going to buy him a "shooter". Not sure if he has the coordination yet, but am curious what ages others have started their sons/daughters and if you have any suggestions for a decent starter bow?

Thank you
BD

As soon as he asked it was time. My boy will be five this month and he's had a bow for two years now.

Maddog Pup. Mike is a sponsor and makes a real sweet bow for that age, looks just like Dad's.

Agreed, when they show interest...

but make it fun and let them shoot as long as they want too.  My boy is three and only shoots about 2-3 arrows before he decides he wants to go play.  Force it on them and it will be work and not fun... and you may loose them for a long time.

My youngest son Tyler started shooting at 2 1/2 years old and he WALKED and shot his first 30 target 3-D course at 3 years old.

As for bows.....Take a good look at the Black Rhino Bows. They also have a great "trade in" policy, where you can trade in the bows that he outgrows, for credit towards a heavier bow.
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

4 is a perfect age. They may not last long, and you want a bow that is child proff, (cheap) You'll only need 10 pounds or less at their draw length. Make sure you get really light arrows.

personally I'd wait for the better bows when they get to age 6 or more and show continued interest.
I've made the simple board bows for my grand kids and they work out just fine. You can PM me if you want more info.

Stringplucker that is a great photo.

Both my boys started shooting bows on there own at age 3 and riding dirts bikes (motorcycles) at age four. you will be amazed at how quik kids learn! Just make shure they know the rules of safety and keep it fun!

I will second what woodchucker said, the black rino is a great kids bow, my son loves his. My kids started shooting at around age 3. As long as they are old enough to understand the safety rules they are old enough to shoot!
