Sanding drums/spindles
« on: February 19, 2019, 08:27:07 AM »
I have a question for all the tool junkies. I would like to have a spindle sander with no table, so basically just a motor with a sanding drum. I have a bench grinder that I virtually never use so the plan is to make a mount that I can clamp to the workbench and have an upright spindle sander.

My issue is that I can't find any sanding drums that screw on to a threaded arbor. Do they exist?

http://www.supergrit.com/OSSSandingDrumsandSleeves

You could also extend the arbor and hold the drum on with a washer and nut.

I thought about getting this one..... https://www.grizzly.com/products/Grizzly-Handheld-Oscillating-Spindle-Sander/T27961

It can be mounted to the bench or used by hand.

This is sold as a bench sander, but they might sell replacement drums.

I must have listened to, too much OCDC when I was a teen, because I have been thinking about your drum for the last couple of hours. It would not be too hard to make one. You could use a large wooden dowel or aluminum rod, drill and tap it, put in a threaded steel insert and screw it onto your arbor. Sound easy huh?

Sounds yes, but my fear is that finding exact center of the dowel would not be a task I am suited for.
