What do you think?
« on: March 02, 2019, 04:32:46 PM »
I was out in my cold shop cutting a piece of wood for my sister and I saw my project bow hanging there on a nail, so I took it down and started sanding on it,rounding the corners and removing material from the belly.
When it was bending more easily, I put the string on it to check the tiller. Here’s the problem. The string is 4 inches shorter than the nock to nock length but when the bow is strung, it stretches out until it touches the belly. The string has been stretched previously by hanging weights from it. I would have thought that by now I could string it up and get it to at least an inch or two of brace.
Here’s a couple of pictures.

Should I keep on removing material until I get it to brace height?
The bow is bamboo backed black palm.

If the string is a decent string and heavy string, I'd say the bow is about an 80 pounder now and needs wood reduced first.

Does the bow feel real strong when floor tillering?

Your Bow looks interesting from here. Did you measure the string length on the Bow and compare to the unstrung length?

It feels like it’s a lot heavier than that Roy. It’s a real beast to get strung and I don’t think I’m that much of a weakling.  :) If that’s all it is, I’ll be ok.
This bow has been giving me fits. The palm wood is strong as heck, but it splinters easily. I really don’t want to mess this one up.

Well hell, Dave.

Why in the world would you try and string a 90 to 100 pound bow?

I gotta come up there and smack ya?

LOL

Get it to a point that you get some decent bend in the limbs at a floor tiller.

I guess I’m just worried that it’ll go from too heavy to too light between one scrape and another. Like I said, this bow gives me fits. There’s one spot on the upper limb that likes to lift a splinter. I’m thinking of rounding the belly more to avoid this.

i would be careful on that left limb. looks like a hinge could develop really quickly just to the left of midlimb. Maybe get some wood off just out of the fades on both limbs.

String stretching is not good when you are trying to tiller a bow.  It can give you fits especially if you are working with heavy weight bows or bows with high string tension.  I use fast flight for my tiller string now and I won’t go back to anything else.
What’s your target weight?  I wouldn’t string the bow until you have a pretty good bend on your long string.   I like to be at target weight at 20” on the long string with a good tiller before I attempt to bring it to brace.
By long string I mean a string that only hangs down about 6” when pulled.
Life is too short to use marginal bow wood
