We had another bow making party today in my shop..
« on: March 03, 2019, 02:55:44 PM »
4 of us playing with Osage and Yew bows.

Look at this curly maple riser.

Trilam with wet coat of tung oil on it, ya let it sit 10 minutes and buff it off.

And it turns into a dull satin look. After 5 coats it gets a shiny satin.

Dennys yew stave after heating in reflex.

Show and tell time.

Ya know how dumb deer are, we are in there making bows to kill deer and the dumb arses are 15 feet from window eating corn.

I assume the tung oil absorbs into the wood a bit. Ever have to reapply after a few months or years ?
Looks amazing Roy

I do 4 to 5 coats, waiting 24 hours between coats.

You can re-apply anytime ya want to. I've never had to do that.

Those are some sharp looking bows. :)     Ya got some Canadian wood thar I see.  Actually Oregon and I think Washington state grow it as well.

I have not used Tung oil in a few years.  Can you apply it over Polyurethane water based. ?

Those bows look awesome.  I like the look of that maple riser.

That’s a heck of a lot of reflex on that yew.  Glad I’m not tillering it  :o

Thanks guys.

The sister stave to that yew stave we did not heat in reflex and it ended up with 2 inches of set, with his 31 inch draw.

Yew is a very soft wood and sometimes very finicky to straighten out.

I figured this one should retain 2 inches of reflex after tillering, which will look nice.

Plan on heating in reflex to the already tilled yew bow, but not much.

Set bothers the crap out of me, I strive for a little reflex or a straight bow when completed.

Thanks Pat, those days are a lot of fun and makes winter pass quickly..

I use tung oil on the bows, Buddy.

I wipe it on with rubber gloves and lay it on heavy, it's like a thin paint consistency..

Let it dry about 8 to 10 minutes, then buff it off with clean rags.

Downside is waiting 24 hours between coats, I do 4 to 5 coats.

It's a nice finish, no runs, zero dust, it's not waterproof but it is water repellant.

I've never ever had any problems with the finish with hunting in the rain, water beads right off.
