Lower Silencer Issues
« on: April 07, 2019, 10:12:09 PM »
Any tips on getting the lower silencer to stay put?

I’ve been experimenting with different types, including wool and whiskers, even trying threading them through the string. In both cases, the lower silencer moves and/or seems to start slipping out of the string while the upper stays perfectly put. I don’t know if this is a common problem, but any assistance would be awesome.

Thanks!

Are you using a twisted string or a continuous loop string?  Regardless, unstring the bow, separate the string into two equal bundles and thread the silencer through.  Doesn't hurt to tie it in place with some light thread as well.  Then rebrace the bow and let the string cinch down on the newly installed silencers.

If you don't have very many twists in the string, the silencer will have a propensity to move.  Just check it periodically and slide its to where it needs to be.

I have had that happen on my upper silencer. I just moved it a couple inches, and never had a problem again. I think it is because some points in the string experience more vibration than others.

Waxing the string real good beforehand might help some.

2nd Orion. You can use dental floss or a strand from an old string.

Thanks for the responses. Threading through the string has been the best so far, but I’ll just have to see what works best to tie them on securely, I suppose.

I build my own wool silencers with about a 6" tag of serving thread on each side to tie them into the string once they are properly located.
Lefties are the only ones who hold the bow in the right hand.

Exactly and for this reason I’ll always request more twist when ordering.
