Mouth Turkey Call Suggestions

I have never ever called a Turkey before, I do know I want my hands free.... Which mouth turkey call do you guys suggest and where to get. I am ok with buying more than one or one type....

My favorite is called Old Raspy Hen and I believe is made by Primos. I would get ones that are pretty basic cuts. Some of the crazier tones are easy to flub if you see a turkey coming in.

Hi Robert, I would suggest a mouth call with a single or double reed since you just starting out, the more reeds your mouth call has the more air you have to use to get it to make desirable sounds. There are many different styles of mouth calls with different numbers of reeds, cuts in those reeds, etc, all designed to make different turkey sounds. I would stick with the simple styles to start and then progress as time goes on, the simple styles are more than enough to kill a turkey.  Since you have never used a mouth call I would suggest than when you purchase one that you simple put it in your mouth and get used to it being there before you attempt to make any sounds with it, some people have a stronger gag reflex and have issues with a mouth call. After you are used to having it in your mouth you can try and make some sounds with it, I have tried to teach people how I learned to make the turkey sounds but most of the time each individual will discover how to make the sounds on their own. You can purchase them at Basspro, Cabelas, Walmart and any other sporting goods store or catalog, as far as brands, I have tried them all and personally didn't see much difference between them other than price.  Don't get discouraged, it might take a while to learn how to use one and I have seen people pick up on them pretty quick. My best mouth call is a Preston Pittman black diamond 4 reed. It is not hard to call with as most 4 reeds. My favorite scratch call is a slate pot call made by Lonnie Sneed Sr. Of Princeton WV. Awesome call made by a world champion caller.

I like the Primos ones with the "Sonic Dome" on them. It, basically, fits in my mouth just right, which helps me to be able to quickly put it in the spot that it needs to be. I'm relatively new to calling turkeys, with just a few years of trying, but I believe those helped to shorten the learning curve some.

Woodhaven mouth calls are my favorite and sound the most natural to me.  A 2nd would be the primos Hooks series.

Just remember , the worst sounding turkey calling you'll ever hear in your life usually is made by live hens.

I have always used a primos raspy hen, call.  I try to buy them in packages of several.  they aren't top of the line, but seem to work really well, and dont break the bank.

 If you have a smart phone, I would definitely suggest downloading a free game calling app.  I play them in my truck during my morning commutes, and practice calling different vocalizations.

Some calls will fit your mouth better than others. Try a few different brands. For me I like 3 reeds by Legacy and Big Lake.

BUT that gobbler strutting in, gobbling and drumming, will get your nerves worked up real fast, in turn screwing up your calling.  So I would suggest a hen decoy, so if you get too nervous like me, give the gobbler something to focus on for the last few yards of his approach.

Thank you guys for all your help. I decided and went to Primo's and pick a few different ones. As of today my dog will hear it and run to me making sure I am OK. Just leaning to make noise right now

Listen you don’t know me but consider what I am saying. It’s april and season is here. No way no how are you going to get it. This isn’t negative it’s factual.
Even basic sounds which can be butched need the proper cadence.
With that out of the way, if you were my brother I’d recommend none of the ones mentioned.
No offense to anyone. Look at Hooks calls. They’re cheap and easy to blow. If the latex on any call is too tight it takes more air  to manipulate the reeds properly. I think Hooks may fill the bill for you. The heart throb, shockwave or game changer should be tried. The tape size comes small, if you order and want regular tape put that in your notes. (This is dependent on palate size and how you run call)
Now the recommendations are for you to get a call and practice with, possibly for next year or the year after if you don’t practice enough.
 Get yourself a decent short box. Long box would be better imo.
Primos, Lynch, Quaker boy honestly make calls that are not really the easiest to run. Yes they work, yes they will kill birds. Get a David Halloran Purple Heart/cedar box. The ease of use is complete night n day.
You tube David running boxes and look at his box call mistakes video for help. I really don’t expect you to believe me but this is the advice I’d give a friend or family member.

Get a push button call by anybody, then get a good instructional video to learn the timing of the calls.  I  think timing is more critical than any thing.else.

Woodhaven makes the most realistic calls, IMHO, but the Primos Sonic Dome Series makes them a bit easier to master--for most people this takes a while so a backup slate or box is a great idea.

Anything you can make sound like a turkey. Just say chalk, chalk, chalk, chalk. I like reeds that I can bend to fit my mouth, but honestly, I can make about any reed work and so can you.
