Need tiller help!
« on: April 04, 2008, 09:03:00 AM »
See "First bamboo backed ipe (BBI) buildalong" post.  I am working on a Bamboo backed ipe longbow which is 66" NTN.  After glue up it retains 1" reflex.  This photo shows it 38@20, and my goal is 50@27.  Right now it's braced at 5 1/2" and I would like around a 6 1/2" brace height on the finished bow.  Looking at the photo it looks to me like the right limb is slightly stiffer, and maybe it could stand to bend some more towards the tips.  I can't afford to cut away much more, I don't think.  All opinions welcome.  Thanks for the help.
Take care, Marty

Left limb, work the area from the hinge to the fade outs, Same area needs work for the right limb but but no hinge is visible. Do you have a tillering gizmo?

Thanks Eric!  I can just use my scraper for what your talking about.  It does look like a hinge.  I just hate to miss weight again!  I'm scared of taking off wood there, because that's what got me where I'm at now.  So it needs to bend more right past the fades?  I was thinking it needed to bend a little more near the tips.

The tips are a little stiff but I would take care of the fades first.

A tillering gizmo will tell you exactly where to remove wood to get the tips moving no guessing  or eyeballing involved.

Thanks for the quick ling Eric.  I remember seeing this one before.  I'll have to make one.
