An epic adventure!!
« on: April 27, 2019, 08:30:39 PM »
I don’t get out to bow fish that often but when the conditions are perfect you drop what your doing and make a way to get on the water.
I met up with my cousin ( who has never been bow fishing) and another buddy this afternoon and hit the water. It didn’t take long to find our target species!
After we shot our 3 allowed fish I sat and watched over 100+ Gar spawn for over an hour on a secluded flat that is very hard to find. It was a once in a lifetime experience!

They are Alligator Gar. You are allowed 1 fish per day per person

Good gosh.  Had no idea they got so big.  Impressive.

So what do you do with a fish that size after you shoot it?  I'm just curious, as I've never bowfished.  Around here, they are mostly regarded as trash fish.

That is a miss conception around here as well. Gar only eat live or fresh bait unlike catfish and other bottom feeders. They are very good eating when properly processed and prepared. They have two large back straps just like a deer or any other large game. The next time I get one I will get some pictures of the butchering process
