A Tom before the storm....
« on: May 02, 2019, 07:11:35 PM »
The weather here in central Tx. is about to be very wet for a while and I still had one turkey tag left. I got home from work yesterday morning and got some work done around my place and got some much needed sleep. Had a buddy come over a few hours before dark and shoot my 60 target course in my front pasture with me. Had dinner with the wife then I remembered I needed to go to another friends place and move a boat away from the spillway of the lake so it wouldn’t get washed away. Looked at the forecast and figured I better get over and get the boat moved ASAP. By the time I loaded my stuff ( hunting stuff , if I’m driving 2 hours I might as well hunt ) it was already pretty late. When I pulled into the ranch it was about 1-am , got the boat moved to high ground and then went to bed. Along about 2:30 am a big storm passed through and woke me up so figured I would not be hunting this morning. But when I got up at 6 the rain had passed so off I went to see if I could call one in....

As it started getting light out I could hear several toms thundering from the trees they are roosted in down along the river. I had on a leafy suit and carried my longbow with cedars and one hen decoy. I can hear real thunder off in the distance and as it gets lighter out it looks as if the bottom could fall out of it at any time. For the next hour I moved around doing my best to get in a position to trick one of these big toms into giving me a shot. A few times it started to spit a little rain but then would stop as quick as it started. At the edge of a big draw I got set up for a few I heard gobbling from down in the woods. Hit the call a few soft ones and it wasn’t long when I saw 2 red heads running up from the deep draw...

I had a good bunch of brush I was hiding in and they never saw me , they didn’t just rush in as happens a lot they kinda hung up when they saw the hen decoy. After about 15-20 hours ah maybe 15-20 minutes one of them made the mistake of getting a little to close. The cedar shaft hit him just a touch low but still in the chest and he went about 50 yards and stopped and lay down. He went down hill and to the edge of the draw , last thing I wanted was for him to pitch off that edge. I was able to back out without being seen so I did just that. Had a bite to eat and gave him a few hours to be on the safe side and upon my return he was right where I left him. He is a nice big bird and was my last tag for this year so now I guess I’ll be after hogs now unless someone in another state need me to come help thin the population down ( I would be happy to help )..

As I left for home it started to rain and it has been raining ever since and looks like much of the same for the next 2 weeks. Was a great morning of carrying a longbow in the woods and you can be sure I’ll be after them again next season. And on a good note I have a new bow waiting to be picked up at the post office tomorrow. Going to get it going tomorrow and go chase some hogs in the rain...
