Broken bow, the fix
« on: May 25, 2019, 05:27:11 PM »
I posted this elsewhere; I made an osage bow for a friend, the tip got broken, it looked hopeless but I gave it a try. I finished it today, it shoots good and should hold up just fine.

Started with this;

I glued the broken parts together to give me a solid surface to glue my first lam to. I filed away all the broken wood before I glued on my first lam.The hardest part was bending the second lam to exactly fit the first the first one, I used a contour gage to get a pattern for my bending jig. Lots of bending and wood cracking but I finally got it right.

I added a long tip overlay for more strength, did a bunch of shaping and string groove cutting, it came out OK

The lady that owns the bow has won at Cloverdale at least twice with it since I gave it to her in 2016. She could be a force to be reckoned with at the Hill shoot next week, I am putting it in the mail on Monday, she should have it in time to compete.

Curious, how did that tip fail?

Something to do with careless unstringing, I don't know exactly.

Julia won the selfbow shootoff at the Hill shoot with the bow, she beat all the men and women in the shootoff.

Julia also shot a 235 at Cloverdale with the repaired bow this weekend, it is unlikely that any lady will beat her score in the selfbow class.
