Hey all,

I have admired that Black Wolf Recurve for a couple years now no matter what brand name it has/is going under.  I don't think I have seen a video or read a test report on it where any negative comments were made on it at all.  I'm talking about significant gripes.  I'd really like to have one, but I'd have to sell my bow to even get in the conversation on it.

Anyway, I have a Morrison 17 inch Aluminum riser.  It's a nice riser for sure, but I'd like to get more performance out of it.  Right now the ILF limbs I have on it are pretty old, a set of KAP carbon/wood limbs in SHORT.  They weren't expensive when I got them so they are FAR from being on the front end of the curve for performance.  I don't want to equal the speed bows out there, I just want more performance out of my riser.  The problem is that there are so many darned limbs that I have no idea what to get and what would be a jump in performance for me.  I'm not hunting right now, just shooting at foam targets in the yard.  I don't expect to hunt hogs this year as I have no place to do it at, but if I do go, the added performance upgrade from a newer set of limbs would surely help out, wouldn't they?

I don't have to have the newest, latest, greatest, most incredible mind blowing limbs ever conceived, I would just like to have a good set of limbs that would at least bring my bow up to modern times.  AT my draw weight of 43 pounds, I need all the help I can get.

SO...if you had a budget of say $250 to buy a set of limbs for a 17 inch Morrison Aluminum riser with the goal of being able to see a gain in performance, what would you buy?  Right now my limbs are SHORT and that makes my bow 58-59 inches, I think.  I'm not wedded to the idea of having SHORT limbs all the time, but I do like the shorter length that it has now.  I've never shot a set of LONG limbs so I don't know if they'd feel different or not.  I have shot a lower pound set of MEDIUM limbs and I shot them just fine.

Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all kindly and have a great week,
Larry

Hmmmm.  You're probably a lot closer to the Black Wolf set up than you think. You have carbon/wood limbs now.  The W&W limbs are carbon and wood.

For $250, I don't think you'll find many limbs that will be a substantial improvement over what you have.  Double that price, and perhaps, but is an additional 5-10 fps worth it?  You'll have to decide.

On the other hand, we all get the itch to try something new/different at times.  Good luck in your search. :goldtooth:

I just went through an ILF limb buying spree and bought several sets of expensive Win & Win carbon foam and carbon wood limbs and a set of Uukha Evo 2 limbs.

To be honest there isn't a few FPS difference in speed between the most expensive ($600+) to cheaper sub $300 limbs regardless of the limb construction. Unless you jump up to the super curve limbs by Uukha, Border or Morrison you won't see a significant performance gain over what you have now.

Galaxy silver star limbs. They're foam/glass and cost you around $120. Good limbs and you can choose the length.
        Or
Galaxy Gold star. Carbon/foam and still under your budget.

Just remember that these are rated on a 25" riser and the weight will be different on a 17"

Should be about 8# heavier on your riser.
40# limbs would end up around 48#@28"

WOW!!

I had no idea that there wouldn't be much difference in the high dollar limbs and the others......maybe call them MEDIUM Dollar limbs.
I'll have to go and see exactly what the limbs I have are.  I remember when I bought them thinking that because they had carbon in them, they must have a bit of an edge on the wood and fiberglass limbs.  They're not bad limbs by any stretch.  I thought I could get a significant up in performance by getting newer, better material construction limbs.

Heck, if there isn't that much difference then I'll just keep the ones I have and maybe get another HILL styled bow.  Been wanting another one of those in a lighter weight.  I like the USED Savannah bows too.

Thank you all for setting me straight and saving my wallet!!  I can get a new carry pistol now.

Have a good week.

If you are running shorts on a 17" riser, I hope you have a 27" draw.  Otherwise you are overdrawing them and overstressing them.
ILF is great but needs to have limb length and riser length tailored to your draw length.  You can always go longer but going shorter causes problems.  Too long just results in a soft draw feel and lower performance.
In a conventional limb the TradTechs are a good deal.  I have an extra set of carbon/woods that need to get cleared out, but good shooters.  In previous TT limbs I found that going from wood/glass to carbon/woods gave me an extra 4 fps.  Going from carbon/woods to al carbon gave me an additional 8 fps

I you really want to up performance you will need to go to a Morrison Max 6 or Border Hex 7.5 or Hex 8 limb.  I have a Border Covert Hunter with Hex 8 limbs and the draw weight only increases 1# from 26" to 28" and still shoots 9gpp over 200 fps.  A set of Max 6 ILF I have is close behind the Border but with more draw weight gain.

Shoot me an email or PM and I will try to help you at greater length.

The Black wolf has been my go to bow for about a year now, and while I haven't shot mine through a chrono, I can't say I've seen much performance increase myself with the carbon limbs. I think the biggest improvement with the bow over the wood & aluminum bows I've shot comes from the riser. It's dead in the hand and not freezing to the touch in the winter.

Sort of related. Im curious how well the black wolf works with high performance limbs like morrison or border. Obviously these limbs were designed for a certain brace height and limb angle which the black wolf may or may not have.

Border or Morrison will work fine on that riser.  I have two sets of Max 6 that I have shot on a Black Bear warf riser.  Being a 21" riser, the limbs did not have the performance fir my 28" draw as they did on my 17" Morrison riser.
The thing you need to consider is the right limb length to match your draw length for the limb on that 17" riser.

FYI...
The Borders will give you a touch more speed with less draw weight climb over the last two inches of draw but lots of folks prefer the Morrison draw.
I think the Max 6 feels like a Border Hex 7

I'd say your best bet is to try and find used limbs to get a better deal. There are always some target archers chasing the latest and greatest and some newish limbs come in at a bargain. I bought Samick Extreme carbon bf's for 160€ couple of years back when they were still retailing for 700€-800€ as the previous owner was not happy about the cast of said limbs.
Also be sure to match the draw lenght of the limbs to yours, easier to tune and softer feel in the draw as well as more efficient (less hand shock and bow noise).
You can only miss in two directions, vertically or horizontaly
