Question about brace height on ILF setups
« on: July 08, 2019, 03:50:48 PM »
I just got my black wolf riser, excellent riser im very happy with it. However, the manual says the brace height is 7 to 7.5 inches. I have some long limbs (WNS carbons not black wolf) which should make a 62 AMO bow. Currently my brace height is 8 and some change and the string has maybe 5 twists in it (its endless loop not flemish). Im pretty sure its a 62 AMO string, is this a common thing with mix-and-match ILF?

Brace height is whatever is the quietest and you are comfortable with. Doesn't matter if it's ILF or a one piece or a take down.

I would check your string length, 62 amo bow should take a 59" string to get proper brace.

I let the bow tell me what its brace height should be. On ilf i run my tiller bolts all the way down then adjust brace height till i like how the string is sitting in the string grooves. After that i work on fine tuning with tiller and fine brace height adjustments till the bow is the quietest.

Longer limbs will run a bit higher brace.
It would seem that the recommended brace that you indicated would be for that riser and their matching limbs.
Do a bit of research with the limb maker and seek their recommendations.  My Covert Hunter has a 6 5/8" brace.  The maker recommends 6 1/2" to 7" so to avoid issues, that is where I shoot it.

So far as the string length...
I have found that listed riser length is often an inch or so different when measuring from center of ILF bolts and adding 5".
I would rather run a string too longs and twist it up than take a chance on not enough twists and having the flemish loops pull loose.

62 inch bow would generally brace at 7 3/4 to 8 1/2.

I would check your string length, 62 amo bow should take a 59" string to get proper brace.

Not on any of my 62" recurves. My strings average 4 to 4.5" less than recurve length. String length 3" less is a general rule of thumb for longbows. I'd rather have them long and twist them up than to short with excessive brace height.

Respectfully Ghostman then your bows are NOT AMO, here is excerpt from AMO definition. Applies to recurve OR longbow. Many have perpetuated the idea of 3 inches longbow and 4 inched recurve. Now you have the facts.
"AMO CONVENTIONAL
BOW LENGTH STANDARD
AMO Bow Length Standard is designated to be three inches longer than AMO
Bow String Master that braces bow at proper String or Brace Height. Bow String
Master will carry only the bow length designation. Example: A Bow String
Master designated as AMO 66” (bow length) will have an actual length under
tension of 63”.
Cable length is determined by placing loops over 1/4” diameter steel pins and
stretching under 100 pound load and measuring from outside of pin to outside of
pin. Tolerance is +-1/16”. End loops of cable will be 1 1/4” long and plastic
coated.
Bow String Master shall have the following material specifications or equivalent:
1/16” 7 x 7 galvanized (Mil-C-1511) or stainless (Mil-C-5424) steel aircraft cable
of 480 lb. test.
A Bow String Master Set shall consist of twenty-five Bow String Masters to
measure bow lengths in one inch increments ranging from 48” to 72”; (i.e. actual
string lengths 45” to 69”).
The AMO prefix to bow lengths in inches means that the bow has been manufactured
to a length that properly uses a bow string designated with the identical
AMO marking. (i.e. A bow marked “AMO 60”, 50 lb. will brace to the proper
string height with a string marked “AMO 60”, 45 lb. to 55 lb.)"

katman I'm not trying to be argumentative but apparently most current bowyers and string makers don't adhere to the AMO standard.

Of the 40+ custom recurve bows I've had in the past 28 years NONE could use a string 3" shorter than the bow length without the bow having excessive brace height and preload on the limbs.

Additionally, I've ordered MANY Flemish and Endless Loop strings from numerous string makers across the country. I told them the bow length was XX" AMO length. The recurve strings received were always 4" less in length.

Is the AMO standard a thing of the distant past when most of the traditional bows were manufactured by a few companies such as Bear, & Damon Howatt?

It is very unlikely that ilf or formula limbs will work out AMO stanards. For example I shoot a 64" Hoyt Tiburon. That is a 21" riser with medium limbs. My sting is 61.5". That gives me a 7 3/8" brace height  with a natural sting twist. There is so much variance in these systems a standard cannot be applied.

Go with whatever works.
I'm shooting with a 9" brace on my 68" recurve. The things shoots amazingly well.

Ghostman, unfortunately not all bowyers  adhere to AMO standards when they mark bow length. No idea why. Most of the time  3" shorter strings worked or got me real close for the many bows I have had. When possible I try to get recommended brace from bowyer. Final tuning determines my best brace for that bow.

The term AMO should not be used unless the bowyer is using it correctly - and FEW do.
Most of my non ILF builds run 3 to 3 1/2" under the bowyers bow length.
ILF varies from 2 1/2 to 4 1/2. I won't build an ILF string without knowing the length of a string that works on it.
