55# Black Widow PSA III with 522-grain arrows and Magnus Classic four-bladers. I've got a week in early September in Colorado and then we'll see what the rest of the month holds as I'll be helping a friend chase mountain goats with his recurve. Good luck out there!

Best of luck to all of you chasing elk this year. Look forward to reading some success stories!! An elk hunt has been on my bucket list for years. Aside from any major catastrophes, next year I will finally get to go.

Oh how I wish it were this year!!!!!

For me I will be using my Big Jim Buff 54@28 with Carbon Express 350's total weight 605 if I remeber right. I have a Utah achery elk tag and a additional cow elk tag to boot. I will end up working opening day but I work at a ski resort so I have elk hunting just a few minutes from the office. I will have my base camp and will hike and bivy from there. Elk herds have been looking good so my hopes are high. Good luck to all.

You guys are making me sick.  My Dr. said no more backpacking in the mtns, chasing elk.
But  Cacciatori said just find a new Dr.  I like his idea better.

Everybody's medical issues are unique so take what I am about to say with a healthy helping of salt.

I was plagued with degenerative arthritis in both knees for close to 40 years.  The pain got progressively worse in spite of the three arthroscopic operations over the years to alleviate acute situations.  My doctor told me to "stay light, stay active and hold out as long as I could before getting the joints replaced".  I did that.  Spring of 2018, at the age of 69, I got both knee joints replaced, six weeks apart.  I went into the surgery as light and as strong as I could.  I did the post-op physical therapy with determination.  Four months after the second operation I was on a plane to Bozeman.  I had a great hunt with three close-calls but no arrow released.  I'm now 70 and I am headed back for another bite at the apple.

So I believe that we can overcome some medical issues with commitment and determination.  I don't know what you doctor sees as the justification of the limitation he is suggesting.  It's none of my business.  But before I accepted such a limit for the rest of my life I would make sure it is justified.  It seems like you might want to get a second or third opinion.

Good Luck!

Thanks John.  The last time I limped out of the mountains from an elk hunt. I avoided knee surgery with lots of pt. Previous back issues pretty much the same tack was taken and that worked out pretty well. During that stuff the Dr said “don’t take up long distance running”. I replied I don’t do that and he said “yes but you do carry heavy packs on your back in the mountains.”

Now another condition unrelated to the back and knee issues has arisen and I can’t avoid surgery this time. We will see I guess.
My son lives in CO and elk hunting with him was just the best of times. I’d like to do that again.

But irregardless of all that,  I like the way you think; thanks for sharing your experience. I am in the midst of planning a bear hunt this coming spring with a certain Canadian;  a new bow is arriving today so I am definitely not giving up.
 Best to you guys,
Gary

you know there's places where you can just walk a few hundred yards from the truck and hunt elk, mainly in draw units, but I know a few in OTC units too, you just need your son to find some

Yes, that is an option. I know of one area I could do that.  But being a few miles in so much fun.
