Arrow configuration question

I have a basic question about arrow selection for my new bow. I have a Holm made River Runner that is 42@28. I draw to 28. I have tuned easton axis 600 traditional arrows to this bow by cutting them to 28.75, adding a 75 grain brass insert, and using a 125 grain tip/broadhead. I shoot 3 5 inch feathers. Total arrow weight is just under 450.

I love the axis traditionals and want to use them but I would like a heavier arrow weight. What do you think about going to a 500 spine, and leaving them longer and loading up the tip to get them to tune in order to get a total arrow weight closer to 500 grains?

I've never liked having a lot of extra arrow length - but I know some guys don't mind.  some other options would be to use a 100 grain brass insert for the axis shaft and using weight tubes (3 Rivers sells them) or trimmer line inside the shaft.  I've found that the weigh tubes don't seem to have much impact on spine - you could try them in your existing shafts.

Could try a .500 spine at 29.5 with 250 up front.  I think the arrows you are shooting are perfect though.

Using .500 spine shafts on a 42# bow with more length and weight up front makes perfect sense to me if you want a heavier arrow.  The more I tune carbon arrows for myself and others, the more I feel that it is a mistake to cut a carbon arrow shorter than 29”, regardless of draw length.  Carbon arrows seem to become less forgiving as length is cut.  While I prefer a 29” arrow for a 28” draw length, I find it much easier to tune a 30” carbon arrow than a 28” carbon arrow, again regardless of draw length.

Kevin, I think the arrows are perfect except for the fact that if I wanted to stiffen the spine to allow for even more point weight, I can't go any shorter. I am kind of up against the wall with this setup, and I can't get any heavier without weight tubes. They do fly nice but I want another 50-60 grains and would like most of that up front.

Just out of curiosity and devils advocate but have you tried throwing a 175 point on and seeing what it does to the tune?

An Easton Axis Traditional 500...~29 7/8"....100 gn insert...125 gn tip...~510 gn total...should be very close.

Would recommending starting with a shaft length of 30 1/4"s.

Scott, I really appreciate the input. I may use that as my starting point. You sound like you have experience with that setup. I plugged those numbers into the spine calculator and it looks great.

For my hotshot hybrid bow that is pretty close to those specifications, I use a 500 spine (gold tip velocity shaft) at 29.5 inches with 75 grain insert and 190 grain head. FOC is above 25%. It has perfect bare-shaft flight.

My guess is that you will be somewhere close to that if you want to use a 500 with a bit of extra weight up front.

FXLTrad….Note: my previous ball park recommendation has been updated....I had neglected to include the shaft stiffening due to moving from a 75 gn insert to 100 gn insert.

Thanks! I have ordered a half dozen 500's and 100 grain inserts. We have a great archery shop here in the Nashville area (Music City Archery) that has a pro shop to help with the tuning process. I think this will get me to the arrow weight I am looking for.

I have to agree. For some reason I use to want my arrows hanging off at an inch or so. Now some of my best flying set ups are full length and I draw 27”
