A short video I made about my first trad hunt
« on: August 12, 2019, 06:53:00 AM »
Hi all,

Since I joined this place I've enjoyed reading heaps of the threads and have tried to soak up as much information as possible. I put it all into practice over the weekend and went out for my first proper hunt with the traditional bow. Here is a short video showing what played out. I appreciate any advice and comments, and yes, I know my shot was terrible.  :banghead:  :biglaugh:

Welcome to the noble pursuit. I liked the video - low key, no bombastic music. Probably adds a significant amount of difficulty to video and hunt.
Good luck on your next!

Real nice video Dylan.  Expecting a bloody arrow soon.  Keep at it!   :shaka:

Very good job on the video!  I agree with others, it was a pleasure to watch.  I’ve never hunted hogs so it was very interesting to me.

Although I have no interest in "capturing the moment" and seldom view such I do welcome you to your trad archery journey.  You might get more out of it if you focused on the "hunt" as opposed to the camera.  JMO

There are very few videos that I can watch from front to the back. Yours was one of the few exceptions. Welcome to the fraternity, you are a fine addition.

Best regards.

Thanks, mate.

I hunt with a camera more than I hunt with my bow, rifle, or otherwise.

While I take my hunting and the welfare of an animal very seriously, I don't take myself too seriously. I like capturing hunts and documenting my experiences just as much as I enjoy hunting. Sometimes I prefer to hunt with other people so I can be on the camera the whole time.

I'm very new to traditional archery but I'm not new to hunting and I'm OK with a few hunts not being successful if it means I get some great footage. In this case, I left the camera behind on the final stalk and can only blame myself for not making a good shot.

If capturing your hunts on video isn't something you're interested in, that's fine, too. Lucky for all of us, we are free to hunt the way we wish to (within the law) so while you can tell me how to get the most out of my hunting, I feel as though I do just fine as it is.

Cheers.

Cool video—it’s refreshing to have a reminder that the hunt doesn’t always end with meat in the freezer. Keep at it and enjoy yourself!

Look forward see more of your work.

It's an overused saying, but for me, it's mainly just about being out there. If it was only about killing, I'd take a rifle. Off this property alone this year, I've probably shot a dozen pigs, 50-ish deer, and a few goats as well. There are plenty of critters to keep me occupied and it's nice to force myself to get closer.

Thanks, mate. It was mostly luck that the footage was usable when I set the camera down and stalked in.

Real neat Dylan, liked it.

Like Bisch said,
Keep after them, and it will happen!!!

I don't believe not putting something on the ground means that hunt was unsuccessful. You're obviously not a novice at hunting, and choosing to pick up a stick and string is a big step in the hunting journey, so I'm hoping you know what I mean there.

I reckon I either succeed or I learn.

Like your attitude here too:

"While I take my hunting and the welfare of an animal very seriously, I don't take myself too seriously.

Keep at it mate, and above all, enjoy getting out hunting with your bow, whatever you are chasing, and wheather you bloody an arrow or not.

Best
Lex

Good hunting to you all.

Cool video sir! Stalking hogs is one of my favorite ways to hunt.  More times than not, those hunts just end up with an adrenaline rush (which is fine)! Video some more and post them up!

Cheers, mate. It's a good way to be. I hunt more than most people so I never take for granted the fact that I get to be outside, observing game, and getting in the zone. It's a wonderful way to live and I wouldn't have it any other way. While I didn't get that boar, it was one of the greatest stalks of my life.

I'll head out again tomorrow but I'm going to a different property. No pigs there; only deer, and they are few and far between at the moment with this horrible drought we are having. I might take my camera and get some footage anyway; see how I go. I'm glad people like the stuff enough to want to see more, anyway.

Cheers.
