arrow spine for a selfbow

on a selfbow with no shelf, what is the rule of thumb on arrow spine? I got a new to me selfbow this weekend and while I had some arrows that seemed to shoot reasonably well from it, there was an obvious sound of arrow against side plate that I'm guessing was because my arrows were too stiff. The bow is 50# at 28, give or take a couple of pounds and I'm drawing it 27", so say 48 lbs.

Generally, 10# less than draw weight will shoot well from a self bow...at least for me. If you are pulling 27" then you can figure your shooting 5# heavier spine  so try 10# to 15# under draw weight...with a 125 gr point.   Pat

I am finding out that no shelf, (not cut near centershot), pick 10# lower, and closer to centershot its cut, closer to the actual bow wieght.
