more FHLB
« on: September 02, 2019, 09:40:44 PM »
Some shots here of two bows both in the fhlb design. first one was a monumental stuff up!. Prepared all the lams , did several "dry runs" all in readiness for lay up following morning, when I noticed the tapered lam had a noticeable dish  in one spot. Cut out another lam, ground it parallel and took a break for coffee. Got distracted by phone call, and so forgot to taper grind. Laid the bow up without detecting that issue, obviously came in way heavy with the three parallels. It is black bean riser.Second bow has a riser of Tasmanian Sassafras , red box accent strip and the limb veneers are Black bean heartwood /sapwood.Getting to be a fan too of the green glass. This bow is 45# @ 28'' and 60'ntn.

Nice work it looks like you carved it out from a hunk of marble.

I was in Australia one time in the early seventies, a few places on the west coast and one place on the east coast. I was a merchant seaman then and did not think much about woods. :)

We have a lot of Acacias , and Eucalyptus, a lot of which are not  so good. Think you would find the country has changed greatly since you were here, and not all good either. Very bad droughts all over country right now. Many cattle farmers are in a bad way, and little sign of any rain

I haven’t done a f/d graph Ritchie. Got to crapped off when I realized my blunder. Came in at 55#. Still draws smooth. Watching your 12” riser model with interest too! I really like the green glass myself.

Far as I can tell, it doesn’t feel a whole lot different to one with a tapered lam. I am just loving this design ( with a taper)! I stayed with the belly down form, with air hose and boy it is finicky to get laid up. Been using zip ties but am going to packing tape as well to “snug” it down.

Yeah, unfortunately a bit of the riser is a bit bland, but I think the rest of it compensates a little. Also my lousy photography wouldn’t allow me to highlite the wild grain in the belly veneers

Thanks for the info Bob I have great interest in trying the three parallel bow your mistake is to my benefit  ;) your brace shot looks good I think Kenny tried one no super/lam and .001 taper but he didn't like the bend maybe the parallel might be the ticket any future shooting reports would be appreciated !

No worries. Must mention that “mistake” bow with the 3 parallels also has the power lam and the tip wedges. Will have the full draw shot tomorrow for you.
