Saturday morning Bro in law nd I headed up to a spot where I had glassed a really good buck the night before… As the sun came up I went out to a ridge glass for the buck in my wind got a small herd of elk that I did not see and they all busted out...I Glass the little while for the buck but could not find him so I headed back up the mountain to find bro in-law and on the way up one of those little bulls from that mornings herd comes around the point of the mountain and into a little saddle I was watching...I headed down to that saddle and cow called a couple times...he responded
I called a couple more times and he chuckled at me and then I heard some cow mews from above me. I did not know it at the time but those cow mews were my bro and the cows he was hearing was me.
We were both making a play on this bull and didn’t know it.
In the meantime another little bull about the same size rolls off the top and joins this bull
This is all happening in a big sagebrush bowl with Aspen pockets... so the bowl responds again and starts coming my way… I look up and see Bro in law a few hundred yards away skyline but he doesn’t know I’m there
This bowl is very steep so I can’t see as they approach the roll of the mountain but both bulls come up to me but they come up high instead of down wind so I pivot and draw but it doesn’t feel right because I’m sitting in an awkward position so I let down
They stand there looking for the cow they heard and have me pinned down both facing me
Bro in law calls and the one turns broadside to look up that direction so I draw and send one over his back...
They bugger about 5 yards or so and the Other one is now broadside facing downhill... I draw settle in and drop the string and place one right in the pocket
They both run downhill over the role of the hill so I run to the edge to look and all I see is hooves as he tumbles down the mountain coming to rest about 80 or so yards from me.
