COHUTTA WILDERNESS
« on: September 11, 2019, 06:11:46 PM »
It has been 7 years since my friend  Doug and I have hunted opening day in Cohutta together.   His son was an All Star high school athlete on the football team and he went on to play for Georgia.....

During that time I cheered his son on, but I always missed my best friend  In the woods.

Saturday we will be heading to the mountains in the chase for black bears.... Bears or no bears... it's all about the Chase.... And  Friendship.

I hope everyone has a great opening day no matter when that is.... And to hunting partners As there is no better way to share your love of the sport than with a friend.

Glad for you having a hunting partner like that.
I lost my hunting partner a few years back.
Sure do miss him.

Just sauntered from Amicolola Falls to Neel's Gap.  Beautiful country.  I have not been fortunate enough to hunt with friends for many years.

I went last year with a couple of friends and primitive camped up a mountain in Cohutta.  I had 3 encounters but no shots.  The adrenaline rush was something else!  They are going back this year but I got an invite to go with a college buddy deer hunting in the mountains north of Rome (1000acres of private land!).  This will be our first time hunting together in the last 7 years.  Good luck to you and your buddy Terry! I can't wait!

You're right Terry, it's all about friends. My friend Doug and I will get together in NW So. Dakota this Sat. for Antelope. This is the 55 year in a row we've been bowhunting together. Good luck for a successful season!

Ron...just a heads up.  GA is much different than NY. I've killed more deer in September than November.  The summer pattern is very predictable. If I would have waited till October every year I would have missed 70% of my deer kills.  I used bow season to fill the freezer, then got selective mid October.

Also, bear season aint that  long now that they threw in that primitive weapons hunt on top of bow season.

The best times for me and deer have been the first 2 and the last 2 hours if the day.....till the pattern changes

It will also be 10 degrees cooler in the mountains....but you bet I'll be in there from daylight till dark!

I can't even imagine missing opening day  :scared:

I used to solo backpack deep into Cohutta in the past.  WAY back in on Tear Britches trail and East Cowpen.  Rough country when you get a few miles back in.  Loved it.  I hunt the mountains about 35 miles East of there now.  I will be chasing the bears for the next month.

Good luck.  It will be a good bear year for the guys that know how to find the right feed trees and have enough boot leather and climbing legs.

Terry, I'm glad you have the opportunity to reconnect with a good friend.  Have a great time!  I miss terribly the company of a couple of friends I shot and hunted with for many years who decided to go a different direction in our friendship. Have a great time.  Friends mean so much in our adventures.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.
