Please critique my form - video
« on: September 13, 2019, 04:54:51 AM »
Hi all,

I've been talking to plenty of people about my form and learning as much as possible. Here is a video I made quickly of me shooting my bow a bit earlier this week. My form has come a long way but I still have a long way to go. Any advice is appreciated.

Pretty hard to tell with these camera angles.  What I see is your string arm elbow moving forward (towards the target) right at release.  Ideally it should be moving back.  The elbow should lead the movement not follow it. Your later shots in this video are much better than the early ones.

Thanks for that, Arne.

Interestingly, the later shots in this video were earlier in the night so I was feeling fresh. It's easy for me to observe those shots as better ones when I get home and analyse the footage.

Cheers.

wilderlife, yer form is just fine as is and as the flying arrow shows.  if yer a hunter, do far less practice in what's basically a target stance and get out roving, taking shots from body positions that are more appropriate during hunting.  one arrow per selected woods target, too.

I definitely need to get out and shoot more stumps and stuff around in the bush more, mate. I just hate losing/breaking arrows at the moment.  :banghead:

I appreciate you thinking my form is good. Thank you for the kind words. If I was consistently hitting what I wanted I probably wouldn't worry much but I don't feel as accurate as I need to be and want to constantly work on things.

i use a judo point for woods walks, they rarely will snake under the grass/bush.  also large neon pink feathers for easiest spotting.

the thing about archery is that there's target archery and then there's BOWHUNTING.  the two have a relationship but they live in different worlds.  unlike a target archery, a trad bowhunter will be required to take shots from the oddest of positions to make an ethical shot on game.

to me, good form ends with hitting a mark consistently at varied distances.  there is no such thing as the perfect form because we're all a tad different physically, and perhaps mentally to boot.  you cannot have a rigid, "perfect" form if yer a bowhunter because your form - holding a bow at full draw and aiming - must be accomplished from various positions, such as kneeling, crouching, twisting the torso, and will even a bit more challenging for tree stand hunters as elevation angles enter the aiming equation.  if you want to see this in action, just review some of terry green's shooting videos - he is a master trad bowhunter of exceptional shooting skill!

there is nothing like roving with a trad hunting bow and a few stout arrows to sharpen both your shooting and hunting skills.  i'll stand in front of a butt to work out some basic form kinks that do develop occasionally, but 99% of the time is devoted to woods walks with a good longbow in hand and a few roving arrows - a "roving arrow" is just my hunting arrow with a judo point.  the idea is to practice like you hunt.  this isn't about flinging dozens of arrows, it's about pretend hunting where you spot a mark (tree stump, bush, clump of grass, whatever) and that becomes the game you Must bag.  make the stalk within arrow shot, and make that One Arrow count to kill the mark.  such archery practice makes us hunters and not target shooters.

anyone can target shoot at fixed distances with a fixed stance.  that ain't practice for hunting and so far fewer will rove the woods and hit marks consistently at varied distances of 5 to 30 yards, where the rubber meets the road.  you have arrived - have at it, sir!

Love it, mate!

I think I need to look at putting collars on my arrows. I hit some stuff with a judo recently and mushroomed the front of the arrow. Quite annoying!

I have a local archery club that I have only been to once and shot compound. I didn't have anywhere near the consistency needed to walk around the course and shoot my recurve. I had fun, but a goal of mine afterwards was to get to a point where I could walk around and land arrows on the target at least (not necessarily in the kill zone) with my recurve, so I've been working towards it since. I go hunting too much and don't get to the range often (haven't been since that first time) but I'll slow the hunting down soon and get out there.

The point I'm making is it'll be a good opportunity to walk around and take different sorts of shots. I'll also get some arrows sorted for my 45# longbow as well, so I won't get fatigued as quickly with it like I do with my BW.

It's all a lot of fun. I shot like crap this most recent Tuesday evening, and today during the day at work. I wasn't satisfied with that so shot some in my backyard after the gym. Even though I was tired after the gym in my arms and back, I feel like the feeling of working out my back helped me remember what it feels like to engage my back more when shooting my bow. I hadn't been to the gym for a couple of weeks so felt a bit tight and bound up the last few weeks, so it was good to get back in the rhythm and shoot well for a change.

I have a long way to go but I'm enjoying the journey. Some of the stalks I've had with my trad bow have been incredible, and more fun than the countless successful stalks I've had with a rifle.

my rules for practice shooting are to shoot when i'm physically/mentally able.  nothing is worse in archery than trying to practice when you are not really able to practice - that can lead to very bad habits.  and end the practice with a good shot.

while i can't rove the wood all the time, i can make shots to 30 yards in my back yard, from varying distances and stances, making ONE arrow count.  shooting only ONE arrow adds pressure to the practice, as it should.

Great stuff from Rob....

I have one comment, but will reserve at this time as it will likely solve itself.

I carry two arrows when I stump shoot.  One has a judo, and the other a rubber blunt.  Using the one with a rubber blunt on harder targets, like stumps that have not yet rotted, cuts down on the mushrooming.

I tell myself that all the time mate, but it's easy to forget as well. Stressful work and other things wreck your mind and then archery becomes something that further complicates things, as opposed to helps you remove the clutter. I need to remember more often.

I'm open to any advice you may give, mate, but since I made this video I've gone through a little bit of darkness and come out the other side feeling fantastic! I just picked a couple of things to work on and a few things came together for me nicely. I'd love to know whether the improvements I made myself have anything to do with what your suggestions may have been.

Some of my rubber blunts are a little hard and I mushroomed an arrow with them. I also wrecked an arrow the other day with a judo. I think my main issue is that some of my spots are so hard/rocky, it's impossible to loose an arrow without stuffing it.  :banghead:

Not anytime soon, mate. I'm in the middle of rushing through work and organising a few things as I fly to Papua New Guinea on Tuesday to go on a hike with my brothers. I drive to Sydney on Saturday morning to spend a few days with them before we head off, so I won't get a chance to put a new video together most likely.

Having said that, if I can, I will, but the range will be short (not that it matters).

If you're on instagram however, my handle is @_wilferlife_
I currently have some footage on my 'story' of me shooting in my backyard and things felt much better and my accuracy was more consistent. It probably still sucks but it felt more comfortable anyway.

Footing arrows works great, I’ve had arrows brush off direct impacts into steel where the field point gets bent. I put a fender washer behind a FP for my blunts.
That’s on carbon, aluminium haven’t fared so well in my limited experience.

If you’re taking off, download any podcast with Tom clumm to listen to on your travels. He’s a bow hunter who is accredited to the highest level as a coach. I’ve picked up a lot listening to him. He has some stuff on YouTube too.

for the toughest of all roving arrows, carbon is THE way to go ... even if yer a hardcore woodie flinger.  you can help a carbon by adding an aluminum or brass "collar" of an inch or two, at its end and epoxied over the threaded point ferrule.
